I feel like they'd have to have done the sequels at least 10 years earlier if they were going to make them consistent with the AU. The OT actors were simply too old to pull off what their characters do in the EU.

The OT characters didn’t need to be in the movies though. And Disney didn’t need to kill the EU. From a business perspective, it was a stupid move. They’re churning out all this live action content now that’s hemorrhaging money and they’ve over saturated the market. Their core fan base has dwindled because Disney chose not to capitalize on an already profitable commodity.
