I liked the fact that is a different Medicine Seller from the Bake Neko/Mononoke. https://x.com/nacch_an/status/1845313538849390977

But I can see why it was a sensory overload. The first Mononoke had muted colors and this one everything was shiny and the camera moving and all. At least in my case I want to see more of Kamiya's Kusuri-uri.

That is a kind of interesting concept, I agree, and I would love to see this world building expanded upon on screen. I just really wasn't a fan of the style choices in the movie. Also, all the screaming/screeching. It was seriously too much. I also didn't really warm up to the overall plot, I have to admit.

I did expect the screaming/screeching, in the anime/Bake Neko movie also has it's dosage. But I admit that the plot confused me sometimes.

This is really interesting information. I can see why it wasn't in the movie but it's very cool.

Reading that thread, I think the info is interesting but it actually makes it incredibly weird that they originally wanted to cast the same VA before the drama/blacklist issue. I wonder how much of this new worldbuilding might have been a last minute asspull to explain away the change of cast.

Seeing that this movie's Medicine seller is way different than the anime one, I don't think Sakurai would have done a good job. In the anime he's quite quiet and mysterious, but this one, while mysterious, has something different in his personality. No surprised if they pulled the yin-yang thing even if Sakurai was kicked off, this Medicine Seller is way cheerful.

Is this Princess Mononoke? Every time I see a reference I get it confused with Princess Caraboo. I have never seen either property but I imagine Phoebe Cates.

Not Op but no, princess mononoke and this series: Mononoke are two separate things. Mononoke I believe, was originally a spin off from a anime horror anthology series. Princess Mononoke is a studio Ghibli movie while Mononoke has both an animated tv series and a movie out for it.

oh my god, I LOVED Princess Caraboo when I was a kid!

Same. I was excited to watch it because more Mononoke, but it was just... Ok? I wanted to like it but left confused about the plot. Had to rewatch it to really understand it (the girl having to let go of her friend because it was getting in the way of her work) but then what did that had to do with the Mononoke? It was like watching two different plots that whee barely connected to each other.

That said I hope they make more Mononoke anime because the original series is so good. But I hope they clean it up to make a bit more sense.

That was one of my main issues (aside from the style) as well. It didn't help that the Netflix subs were kind of hard to read in their default setting and all the too-bright colours really messed with my eyes so I missed a lot of info because I didn't read all the subs, which isn't usually something I have issues with. I had to read up on some things afterwards (because I didn't want to get another migraine by watching it again) which had never happened with the original series. It felt a lot of the plot wasn't vague to keep up the mystery of the mononoke like in the original but rather to be vague for vagueness' sake to appear smarter/deeper.

I haven't seen it yet, so I hope I'm not disappointed as I also love the original series.

If you expect a Medicine Seller like Sakurai's, he's not. But Kamiya did an amazing job doing this character.

I kinda have to agree; it was a lot. And also I hate the "lore". One of the things I liked most about the series was how mysterious the Medicine Seller was, and I would have been fine with the reasons behind this being a different guy being just another weird mystery we never get to understand.

I was also massively disappointed, but for reasons that boil down to the fact that it didn't FEEL like a Mononoke story. There wasn't enough horror in it, nor exploring the ugly emotions of humanity the way the original series did. It didn't did deep enough into the girls and glossed over their development far too much. It felt too sanitized and simplified while also pumping too much into the visuals without actual substance behind it.
