NGL I totally agree. They did a terrible job of showing the fascination with a westerner and it didn’t help that they cast someone who is generally below average in the looks department.

... yeah. I don't think casting a much better looking actor would've 100% solved the problem for me, but it would've helped. The show is pretty good, this is one of the few areas they didn't sell it for me. I could see why Blackthorne would be intriguing as a curiosity and as a political pawn, but I don't think they really sold me on why Mariko would be romantically and sexually attracted to him enough to sleep with him so early on and be so drawn to him.
