NGL I totally agree. They did a terrible job of showing the fascination with a westerner and it didn’t help that they cast someone who is generally below average in the looks department.

... yeah. I don't think casting a much better looking actor would've 100% solved the problem for me, but it would've helped. The show is pretty good, this is one of the few areas they didn't sell it for me. I could see why Blackthorne would be intriguing as a curiosity and as a political pawn, but I don't think they really sold me on why Mariko would be romantically and sexually attracted to him enough to sleep with him so early on and be so drawn to him.

Yeahh I'm highly critical of any white man/Asian lady pairings in western media and while I thought it was fine, it def was prob the least interesting part of that show by far.

I know what you mean. There's, uh, so much potential for coming off super problematic or fetishy in a way that's super squicky for me. They avoided that, but didn't sell me on the romance/sexual attraction.

Hold up. This made me interested in what this show is about, and apparently the MC is played by COSMO JARVIS?? I only remember when he was younger and I thought he looked quite good... also did not realize he does acting lol.

I did take a few glances at screenshots from Shogun and I can see why Toranaga would be the more obvious choice though.

You would be a little more on board if you saw the original miniseries, with Richard Chamberlain as the pilot. Be still, my 13-year-old heart!!

There was so much more to them in the book, as well; worth a read!

The Richard Chamberlain miniseries was amazing! I’ve never read the book though. I just remember that my dad always needed to make a character list for every James Clavell novel and it put me off reading them when I was kid. I should definitely check it out now though.

There are a lot of characters, it's true....
I remember that mini-series came out, and my sister and i looooooooooooved it, and so i had to get the book and just devoured it. It was really good!

That one was amazing. Dream cast, too, their Toranaga was a legend. And the Spaniard the pilot he was friends with, and that schemeng Jesuit Alvito ... the list just goes on and on. I had such a ball reading the book and picturing the characters the way they were in the original miniseries.

There's a cool "interviews with actors" or "making of" sort of thing that gets bundled with some of the DVDs of it, too. I think I remember their talking about Toshiro Mifune not speaking hardly any English at that point and stalking around the set in character most of the time. XD;

But yeah - definitely seconding your recommendation about the book. It's spectacular. And, apart from all the parts that are just really satisfying writing, some of the sexual jokes were very special. The scene where they're conferring about whether to leave a live duck in his room because they're unsure of his sexual habits but attempting to inquire about them apparently gives offense - my immediate family could not breathe from how hard we were laughing.

People who have seen the new Shogun series, is it worth watching just to see Louis Ferreira or is his part really small? I love the original Shogun miniseries and I have the book but have never managed to sit down and read it. But I ADORE Louis Ferreira so I am wondering if I need to eke out some time for this one, too.

It's a really small part, almost blink and you'll miss it. I wasn't even sure that was him under the beard. He plays a Portuguese ship captain. I wouldn't watch it just for him, but FWIW I haven't read the books either and enjoyed the series.

Ah, that's a shame. Rodrigues was such a colorful character in the book. He would have made for great dramatic content in the miniseries, but only if they'd bothered to give him screentime!
