Gift for workaholic

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I am at a loss what to get my sister. She is late 30s, single, loves her cats and has no hobbies other than working too much. As far as I can tell she wakes up and is on her computer until it is time for bed. I am prob just going to end up with a giftcard but I would really love to find some unique or fun little actual gift I can get here, I am just out of ideas.

Make her a cookbook of mug recipes. Yes, there are cakes, but there’s also breakfasts and other meals. Something like this: https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/photos/microwave-mug-recipes

Ohhh this is an interesting idea. I knew of mug cakes but hadn't really thought about savory or meals. Going to do some research. Ty!

Fred and Friends actually had mugs with recipes printed on them a while back, but I think they'll be awfully hard to find now. (That might be a fun later gift, though-- put one of her favorite recipes on a mug for easy access!)

a robe or slippers. A large cup or a small thermos. A GRUPPSPEL or just a seat pad. Cat toys, depending on what they like or just a large TRIXIE Cat Activity Brain Mover. Trekking poles or a JUCKER HAWAII Ocean Rocker Balance Board. Or a yoga mat.

The longer boards are easier to start on. Re yoga mat - the expensive and thick ones are usually the best. A BJD doll if she's into girly things. Pink Peppermint foot cream by LUSH or a L'Occitane Almond Shower Oil.

And last but not the least UGEARS 3D Wooden Puzzles Box that no one really needs but everyone can appreciate.

...I want one of those balance boards now lol

Ty for the suggestions!

We bought this for my cat and she goes crazy for it! We keep it in a cupboard and bring it out in a few evenings a week for a short while. She got bored of it for a while when we’d have it out every evening, so we kept it in the cabinet for a month and once we brought it back out she went nuts for it again.

And then there’s this that might be useful for sister if she uses a tablet or Kindle at the end of the day.

These are not affiliate links, btw. Just some stuff I have either purchased or have on my wishlist that I thought might be helpful if not as the actual thing, then to help you think in new directions.

Hmm the cat toy looks great - her cats love things under blankets! - but I feel like I always end up getting her cat things. But then she does seem to always love them so maybe I should just stick with it.

DA
I had similar toy and you need to adjust the "blanket" all the time and it's kinda loud.

Pamper package. Eye mask, face cleansers, foot spa bubbles, that kind of thing.

Or a huge bottle of wine.

12yo boy

(Anonymous) 2024-12-18 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone know what books a 12yo boy might be into? He is a wee young (emotionally) for his age but very smart, and only recently really started getting into books. He has really been into the Wings of Fire books. I am just so out of the loop for this age group.

When my little brother was 12 he absolutely devoured the Percy Jackson books. I'd also highly recommend the Artemis Fowl books. I've heard good things about the Wingfeather Saga, but have never read it personally either.

Percy Jackson maybe?

Skulduggery Pleasant is perfect for that age. Skulduggery Pleasant is a living skeleton and a detective who takes a 12 year old girl as his (work) partner.

I'm seconding this one - I volunteer at a library and have had kids around that age asking for the Skulduggery Pleasant books.

To throw in a book rec, I remember enjoying Holes by Louis Sachar.

Maybe something like a book journal or 'wreck this journal'/list prompt books (the sort that has prompts like write down top 5 favorite movies or writing up specific fantasty scenarios).

Black and Blue Magic by Zilpha Keatley Snyder.

Harry Houdini Marco is given an amazing magical potion that lets him grow wings! Just a really great book.

Also, even though it doesn't seem like people rec these much anymore, The Jungle Books and Just So Stories by Kipling, and Tom Sawyer are interesting, different, and just good.
