The more I poke around and hear about Bluesky, the more it just seems to be Twitter 2.0 only for angry doomscrolling millennials rather than right-leaning tech bro conspiracy theorists.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-21 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Sort of. Twitter-of-10-years-ago 2.0 is more like it, with its perks and flaws of 10 years ago too.

Definitely not an X-of-today 2.0.

Sounds about right from what I've heard of BlueSky. Exactly the same self-righteous, self-congratulatory bullshit as Twitter, just from the opposite side of the political spectrum.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-21 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah that's not a bluesky thing, that's a politics and fandom thing. Those groups will always be self-righteous and self-congratulatory no matter where you go.

But at least it's avoidable on bluesky. I go there to follow lists of cool animal pictures and science news. I visit like once a week. Never seen a hint of drama or had the site push political tweets at me, while they're unavoidable on X even if you specifically do not follow politics and try to block all politics of any side. It's Elon's mouthpiece and you're functionally not allowed to block him because even if you do, the site finds other ways to push his tweets at you through other hashtags or rec lists.

The site itself is definitely different. Fandom, however, is fandom and switching sites didn't change them.

I've seen Bluesky referred to as "Gab for liberals", which sadly seems accurate from where I'm standing.

Yes. There's trolls on there too.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-21 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven’t experienced this but I did get an account and really disliked it. Pestering to follow stuff outside my stated interests, showing me the same AI “nature” pics over and over because I said I like nature, stuff like that. I ended up deleting it after about a week.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-21 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
They sound like a collection of assholes who aren't worth bothering to know about, especially if they're that eager to jump in on mob mentality.
You're probably better off not knowing those people tbh.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-21 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Am on bluesky, have no idea what you are talking about. But I also have one follower and follow like 3 people so it may just he that I live in the void.

Not OP, but your blocks, who is blocking you are public there and can be accessed through a website called clearsky. People have been using that to hunt for the "enemy" by checking the blocklists of certain accounts and creating lists that can cause harm to unsuspecting people.

Don't let it get to you. Some people go through the block lists of big accounts and put anyone they can find there on a list without checking the accounts or verifying if they have found the pro/anti in their midst. I once found myself added to one of these too, but I could only laugh at it, because the reason for this was none other than being in mutual block with a person who draws shota porn.

They made me uncomfortable with their content, so I silently blocked them and they blocked me when they saw my block. As simple as that. *shrugs*

I do hope they will eventually repair the security because I don't think being able to see blocks and lists by a simple click or website is healthy on the long run.

I have no idea what this means. Maybe it's only a fandom thing? I'm on Bluesky, following a lot of the same people/groups/whathaveyou that migrated over from Twitter (Al Jezeera, a number of senators/congresspeople, NPR, AP, the like) and I'm not on lists, not bugged to be on lists, join lists, make lists...I just repost pretty pictures and interesting news/science items and seem to collect followers for no reason whatsoever (I've only made three? unique posts since I joined, so it's not my sparkling content!).

ewwwwwwe, Al-Jazeera.

I really want to like Bsky but the public blocklists are crazy to me. It's like they want to make it a different kind of PVP zone from Twitter. I already hated using Twitter because how easily searchable out-of-context tweets were, unless you locked your account or censored everything... Now people can comb through your blocklist or publicly add you to one. Wtf?

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds annoying.

My hesitation to join new socials strengthens.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not really getting what the issue is. If other users are jumpy enough to block you for something you didn't do, they're probably unstable enough that interacting with them would cause you grief.

Consider it your complimentary idiot-filter?

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is my first thought. If someone wants to block me for the cute animal videos or the completely G-rated fanart that I repost, I consider that a win because they aren't someone I would want to be interacting with anyway.

Bluesky is objectively more functional to use as a platform than Twitter, so there's that. The unfortunate thing is that anyone can make a blocklist. Some people even make deliberately deceptive ones, because there are assholes everywhere. Some of the lists you're on could even secretly be made by antis posing as proshippers in order to make proshippers look bad for targeting people who mind their own business, or trolls looking to stir more anti/proship drama. Sound paranoid? Look into it. It's a thing.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's worth questioning if it was made by proshippers to begin with. Not because they can do no wrong lol, but because I've seen plenty of people making fake block lists to fuck with a side, mostly transphobes making blocklists to block terfs, but it has lgbtq and trans on it instead.

My stay on Bluesky has been very pleasant, but the blocklists are one of those things that sound like would be covenient but turns out are way too sploitable.

Babe you have *got* to care less. You just have to be able to not care when people do stupid, silly, immature shit.

Good luck carving fandom space out there though. Sounds rough.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 03:52 am (UTC)(link)
This is why I prefer tumblr. I block someone, they don't get a notice. I don't get one when I get blocked either. Win-win.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I just went to check up wtf Clearsky is on Bluesky and the drama around it seems kind of dumb.
Kind of tempted just to put a note in my bio to say I'll block anyone who annoys me, because it really does seem like annoying people who are doing the block lists on there.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-22 10:17 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really liking bluesky, but I only use it for a really tiny corner of one fandom. It's definitely the kind of niche group that "antis" or whatever in the wider fandom vehemently hate, but the block lists for specific tags/words have been pretty good about keeping people who don't like it from seeing it and people who do like it from getting posts against it. It's been very peaceful.

We did have an issue back on twitter with some folks passing around a google doc of users in the corner (even some who weren't really but were incorrectly assumed to be for some silly reason or other), but I haven't seen that on bluesky. It's a nice change from being harassed all the time.
