Kids media that holds up

(Anonymous) 2024-12-21 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secret 3 - what is some stuff you loved as a kid and still holds up today? Books, games, movies, etc

Adventure Time

(Anonymous) 2024-12-21 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That show still makes me laugh.

I think there is a lot of newer media, especially tv shows, that holds up. Older stuff from the 80s and 90s can be good for a laugh or a fun nostalgia drinking game, but it doesn't always hold up.

Right? I had to double check before I replied, but yup. Main audience was intended to be children but honestly I think it ended up being bigger with teens and adults.

One Piece, in a weird way. I started (and loved it right away) when I was 12 and 20+ years later it's still my favourite story. I've reread the early parts multiple times, it's still fantastic.

Mulan (the original Disney movie) also still holds up and remains my favourite Disney movie.

The episode where Jon gets fed up with his creditcards and decides to cut them all up and go cash only lives rent free in my head for some reason.

The Dark is Rising. In fact, there are aspects to it that I didn't love as a kid but can appreciate more as an adult.

Alice in Wonderland was my favorite book when I was a kid and I still enjoy it.

The movie Little Monsters (from 1989) surprisingly held up when my family watched it a couple months ago.

I don't know why, but that movie absolutely terrified me as a kid. To this day I get creeped out thinking about it. I should give it a rewatch some day, I bet it is not nearly as creepy as my child memory of it is.

Animaniacs

No, no, fingerprints!

(finger Prince?) I don't think so...

Are You Afraid of the Dark? Some episodes are bad and the effects are cheesy, but there are enough that still actually give me a fun scare when I rewatch them.

I was obsessed with AYAOTD when I was a kid, and whenever I do a rewatch as an adult it's like a big comfort blanket. It's such condensed 90's cheese but some of the storylines and monsters have been stuck in my head for years.

Classic Disney

I can watch Cinderella or Snow White or Sleeping Beauty and just enjoy the animation. Like, dang that's ~Art~ right there.

I also just like Fairy Tales. Grimm's, general retellings, Disney, whatever. They're fun.

Arthur. Even the later seasons with the crappy animation still had good storylines.

"The Parent Trap" (1998)
It's a comfort film, and I think it's aged fairly well. I feel like it didn't pander to kids and as an adult I enjoyed the romcom aspect of the parents' story. And Meredith is the perfect bitchy villain!

It's been a while since I've watched "Now and Then" (1995), so I would like to hear what other FS visitors think about it aging well? I loved it when I was a kid.

"Little Women" (1994)
I want to like the 2019 adaptation but my rose tinted goggles for the 1994 version just makes it pale in comparison.

"The Secret Garden" (1993)
I still remember sitting in my 2nd grade class watching this movie!!! Such a beautiful film. The obnoxious brat child in both Mary and Colin has the depth to see them grow when called out and given a chance to improve.

A little random but I haven't watched "Willow" (1988) or "Legend" (1985) since I was a little kid. I saw "Legend" when I was like 4 and for quite a few years I believed unicorns were real because I saw "Legend" and I couldn't comprehend how a movie could have faked a unicorn horn on a horse.
I would love to hear if anyone has any opinions on if these films have held up?

"A Little Princess" (1995)
The ending always pulls my heartstrings.

I read "The Outsiders" earlier this year, and I hadn't read it since 8th grade social studies class XD and I was impressed by the strong narrative and high drama. It holds up and has timeless themes (sadly).
I haven't been able to watch the 1983 film because the book made me cry, I don't know how well I'd handle young Ralph Macchio as Danny.

I want to say "Labyrinth" (1986) has held up well but that ending still makes me a little sad. I remember even as a kid feeling disappointed that the movie ended in a dance party with the Muppets.

I still enjoy "Home Alone" (1990) and "Home Alone 2" (1992) a lot.

I mean...do I have to say "The Addams Family" (1991) and "The Addams Family Values" (1993) still hold up? They've been Halloween classics forever.

And I actually really love "Street Fighter" (1994) because it's a goofy 80s action film.

I'm going to stop because I'm realizing I watched a lot of films as a kid. LOL

*Correction: "Street Fighter" is a corny 90s movie but my thumb hit the wrong digit and I didn't catch it.

SA again

I just really wanted to add, "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" because I watched this a couple years ago and I loved it. I really appreciated the more mature themes I didn't pick up on as a kid.

The parents were separated/not getting along. The neighbor dad wants to impart some dumb idea of masculinity on his son but overcomes that shallow idea by the end of the film. The bratty kids have good redemption arcs. The effects are still cool as fuck!!

Digimon Adventure. Still love it decades later.

Gargoyles. It actually holds up a little better now that it can be watched on streaming, as a kid I remember the world tour arc going on *forever* so I was surprised to realize it’s actually not nearly as long as I remember. Months of reruns made it seem longer than it really was.
