What's the weirdest fandom thing you've seen someone insist is true that was absolutely not true?

As much as I hate the Melkor abuses/tortures Sauron interpretation, I hate even more the "they did no wrong, it was all the Valar and Eru's fault" club. Uh, no. Even if you think Eru and the Valar screwed up on a lot, which I can buy, they tortured, murdered, conquered, and destroyed for fun. They are not secretly heroes. They are evil.

Tbh for me it was the insistence that there was a secret good 4th episode of season four that would totally reveal that the season was a hallucination!! The sad thing is I lost a fandom friend to that bullshit, I occasionally go back to check on her and she still genuinely thinks that there was meant to be a secret 4th episode that got pulled because ‘the higher ups’ didn’t want it released.

Truly wild and very scary.

It kept getting worse even from there. That whole Apple Tree Yard thing was honestly frighteningly insane. And so many of them STILL believe there is a secret episode or season coming out eventually that was produced eight years ago.

Okay, as someone who was never into the thing, this sounds monumentally unhinged. But - what possible relevance was unsubstantiated rumor was that something no one had ever seen didn't suck ... supposed to have to the canon that humans actually were able to watch (that apparently sucked)??

In the mind of the conspiracy theorists, the final season was a practical joke and it was really all just a coma dream. The REAL final season has them declaring their love and riding off into the sunset or whatever. And Apple Tree Yard was the original show that they thought was the real final season because characters and production staff had names like Mark and Steven. These were obviously hints for the only true Sherlock fans, which is how the Johnlock psychos think of themselves. “Unhinged” doesn’t even begin to touch it.

... *blinks. Blinks again. Still can't quite wrap my head around anyone actually believing this.*

I genuinely don’t know how anyone can actually believe something like that for so long, like I won’t claim I haven’t ever been pulled into fandom groupthink over a fanon ship ‘totally going canon’ or some other fanon theory in my life, but when I got space from the fandom it gave me the clarity I needed about the situation to realise I had just been in too deep and got convinced by voices that at the time I thought were smart.

But I don’t think the people still believing this are letting themselves gain that clarity and it’s legitimately disturbing.

When the Owl House was still happening and people were delusional that Luz/Hunter was gonna happen at the point where Hunter was with Willow and Luz had already kissed Amity.

Yuuri and Victor never kissed and their whole relationship was a queerbaiting no homo joke.

That whole "it's basically canon that Bucky was raped by HYDRA" thing. I get why it appeals to some people's ids, and yes, it's possible that it might have happened, but there's little concrete indication on screen that it actually did. It shows up everywhere, often untagged, and the people heavily into it get very angry if anyone else disagrees with their headcanon or isn't into their kink.

Right?! As if the psychological and physical torture wasn’t enough to break him. I’ve blocked as many tags as I can, and some still slip through because of the lack of tags. It’s frustrating. I do not want to read that, and I definitely don’t want to see that. Tag your shit, people!
