That was his second try though. Previously he'd argued to the Pope it was completely legal for his late brother's wife to marry him (marrying a widow/er of a dead relative was legally prohibited without special permission from the clergy throughout the mediaeval era in Western Europe). The whole unclean and hated thing came after Katherine of Aragon failed to provide him with a living son when he needed to backpedal on that. He'd subsequently backpedal on the backpedal, but also backpedal on back-peddling the backpedal, before saying screw the whole thing and that he was going to start his own church; with blackjack and hookers.
