OP of the secret here. I believe that deep down, Flynn is getting tired of writing about a spiky blue hedgehog and wants to become a real writer™ by writing about real superheroes.
The crossover , in addition to being a blatant cash grab, is most likely Flynn's way of getting his foot in the door to become an actual superhero writer with the big dogs at DC.

It also doesn't help that apparently things aren't doing so hot at IDW publishing
