Come on, is it not exhausting always rooting for the anti hero?

DA What does that have to do with villains?

Re: Times where you rooted for the villain!

DA - one could argue that an anti-hero is a villain you root for. But I was also just assuming other anon saw an opportunity to reply with song lyrics and took it.

Wouldn't that be an anti-villain?

People need to stop assuming everyone will understand their references.

I love that you used song lyrics and no one recognized.

I recognised them but was waiting it out to see how long it would take someone else.

Not that often. I love villains as villains. Villains are fun when they are being evil.

In Jurassic Park I rooted for the dinosaurs, if that counts. All the movies, actually. Go dinos.

I like dinos better then people at all times.

This isn't about villains not being villains though. This is about villains winning while being villains.

Okay, maybe I misread it. The title said rooting for villains. I took that to mean when you wanted the villain to win because you sympathized with them and/or hated the heroes.

Most horror movies.

I always rooted for the rival team in sports movies, if that counts. Something about them always being assholes just to make us root for the main team when they didn't have to be written that way annoyed me enough that I circled all the way around to liking them. Oh, and the smart kid who the teachers liked who was always an asshole to the main character so we'd feel bad about the main character getting bad grades. No, if you're likable enough I don't need your classroom competition to be an asshole in order to sympathize with your bad grades. So you must not be likable enough on your own.

Dark Night of The Scarecrow ... because seriously Bubba DIDN'T DO IT! Get them all, Bubba!

Tons. I got to the end of Empire Strikes Back feeling like "aaah Vader, you were so close ..." and about ready to kill R2 for managing to get the Falcon out of there at the last second. Luke's broken, muttered "I won't be able to resist him" just had me wild. XD;

With all sorts of stories where the villain tries to take the hero's love interest, I thought the lady was crazy. Five year old me watched The Swan Princess like, "why on earth would anyone prefer a boring prince to an amazing, shape-shifting sorceror??"

Pretty much any situation where a charismatic villain makes a "join me!" speech, with fairly little regard to whether what they're describing sounds good or sounds like a gorey dystopia. I just like imagining THAT fork in the road being taken, regardless.

Situations with a dragon and a knight - I absolutely want the dragon to rip the puny human to pieces.

By the way, when stories go "look, the only people who like this guy are weak willed and stupid," I just think the author is abusing their soapbox. They're free to write whatever they want, but I'm just as free to have fun against the grain if I want. And I do.

NGL, this was me with Kylo Ren and Rey in The Last Jedi. I wanted him to lure her to the Dark Side so they could rule the galaxy together. Failing that, I wanted Kylo to go full on Dark Lord like the end of that movie implied he was going to. I'm still disappointed about what we could have had. *sigh*

Fair. I would have liked both of those endings better than what they actually went with.

Oh, man. Have you ever noticed you don't find a particular actor hot ... except when they're playing villains? I was so confused until I figured out the pattern there.

Any time I find myself disliking the designated good-guy heroes and the designated villain doesn't seem all that bad to me.
