I'm right there with you OP: just ship it as it is. (Though there is also option 3, which I've seen at least once, very credulous people believing that actors' listed heights are their actual heights and googling this instead of trusting their own eyeballs when they right fanfiction, which has led to hilarious misinterpretations of their height gap.)

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
There's also deliberate visual choices in regard to height as well. Some productions have made a height difference not exist with boxes/lifts(see Tom Cruise in any of his roles and Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark) and others have created ones with the same tricks.

Like... just look at the characters in the canon, lmao.

Yeah definitely there are visual tricks/lifts, though in this specific case the people who actually work with him are pretty open about the (listed) ""5'9'"" guy being more like 5'5" (which is what he looks like next to his average-height fellow actors).

I think some fans are so against the former behaviour, because it tends to go hand in hand with uber woobification of the made-short half, that they over correct too much in the other direction and will insist that actual height differences in a canon don't exist at all(and anyone enjoying that is Doing Something Wrong).

Which is to say I agree with you OP. Made up height differences are annoying, but canon ones are cute and can be an appealing part of a ship.

I can see this getting complicated when there's lots of different versions of a canon or ship e.g. Marvel universe

I get this. I like IC writing over stuff written to focus on specific kinks that makes the characters nothing like they are in canon.

Also, personally, I love to read a shorter character domming and/or topping a taller character. As long as it fits the characters.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
This drives me batty. Especially when the "make them shorter" character is always the sub or the bottom in the fandom. They also like to add curly hair. Short and curly haired and willowy, no matter what reality is.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd noticed this and it's so weird to me. I wasn't really familiar with m/m when I got into the MDZS/The Untamed fandom and the strangely insistent focus on one character being shorter was just baffling. Like okay, he's a bit shorter, and...?

Oh, apparently it's important that he be short and kind of child-like so he can get pounded in the ass better. Or something. IDK.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
hahaha shoutout to One Piece writers who think the 1cm difference in height between Sanji and Zoro amounts to 6 inches or more depending on who's topping.

/HUGE SIGH

*giggles* I once started reading a fic about Kili and Tauriel and the first thing they did was mention how tiny and short for an elf Tauriel was and how tall for a dwarf Kili was and I lol'd my way out of the fic.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha! That is hilarious. The lengths (heights?) people will go

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's both hilarious AND kind of weird. Like why get into that pairing if you mind so much about the woman being taller?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh my god. xD

Any examples?

I know people don’t always like to name their fandoms and pairings, but for my general fandom knowledge, I’d be very interested in examples of both types – non-existent differences that get massively played up and actual differences that get ignored.

Jaskier/Geralt in Witcher fandom, Jaskier is almost always portrayed as about a head shorter and slight of build. That one is a little tricky because there are multiple sources, but most of what I've read is based on the TV show and that actor is not a small or slight man. Though tbf the show tried their best to make him appear smaller than he is, just not necessarily shorter.

Pretty sure Bucky and Steve were about the same height but that varied wildly depending on how the author was writing - with the woobie angst character suddenly becoming smaller.

idk about the ignored but I mentioned above, anything Zoro/Sanji in One Piece. They're literally 1cm apart, for all intents and purposes equal in height. Whoever bottoms is written shorter no matter what, like scoop-him-up-and-cuddle-in-lap shorter.

IIRC Crowley and Aziraphale are the same height in the book, except Crowley only wears black while Aziraphale wears white. In the fandom Crowley is the tall and skinny while Azi is the short and round.

Dean/Castiel, they're near enough the same height but a lot of the fanart would make one of them significantly smaller than the other.

Sheppard/McKay, McKay is like maybe an inch shorter?

Superman/Batman, even in canons where one of them is a little taller it's not by more than an inch or so.

For the flip-side however, and granted I only saw two posts but it was still weird to see people being mad/snarky that it's popular to see art and fic of Thorin/Bilbo with a height+size difference when in canon Bilbo is a head shorter than Thorin. Also book canon Bilbo is even smaller than the dwarves, so like, doubly weird to be irritated about that.

Two "non-existent differences that get massively played up" for exactly the same reason that I've noticed - Joe/Nicky in The Old Guard and Dean/Sam in Supernatural. The shorter guy in both cases is like 6 feet tall, and the taller person is 3-4 inches taller. As someone who's 5'2", the uwu softboy is still built like a brick shithouse in my eyes.

The one I was referencing was Cristobal/NoHo Hank from Barry - the actors' officially listed heights are 5'9" and 5'11", respectively, so you'll find depictions of them in fanworks where they're almost the same height, but lmao they are not even close (people on his productions put the former's actor at about 5'5"-5'6", which is about right from full-body shots of the two of them standing the same distance from the camera). But nor is the show doing any work to make it look like they are, which is the crazy thing. There are even jokes about Cristobal's (gang's) height. People are Googling something they could use their retinas for.

On the flip side Quiet from MGSV is clearly very tall (she is taller than several of the male renders), and there is even a scene where she and the main character stand face-to-face the same distance from the camera (full-body), where she is barefoot and the mc is in boots, and the top of her head is pretty much exactly level with the top of his. The scene is famous, because it's very shippy. Yet in tons of fanart Quiet shrinks like a foot to come up to his chin or even shoulder???? Because she's a girl, I guess???????? It is known, women and ukes cannot be above nose-height???

I think it's wild how Ultrakill fans make V1 and Gabriel have the same height when Gabriel is twice the size of V1, literally.

Like you said, people are afraid of power imbalance, but also, most of fandom likes Gabriel as a sub-bottom, so it comes of as they not wanting him to be a tall sub-bottom.

Thank you for making this secret-maker! The picture you've used is absolutely great, 100% fits what I was going for. :)

Ooh, this bugs the crap out of me. Same with making the designated bottom in a slash fic all thin with a tiny waist when they’re thick and buff in canon.
