I'm right there with you OP: just ship it as it is. (Though there is also option 3, which I've seen at least once, very credulous people believing that actors' listed heights are their actual heights and googling this instead of trusting their own eyeballs when they right fanfiction, which has led to hilarious misinterpretations of their height gap.)

There's also deliberate visual choices in regard to height as well. Some productions have made a height difference not exist with boxes/lifts(see Tom Cruise in any of his roles and Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark) and others have created ones with the same tricks.

Like... just look at the characters in the canon, lmao.

Yeah definitely there are visual tricks/lifts, though in this specific case the people who actually work with him are pretty open about the (listed) ""5'9'"" guy being more like 5'5" (which is what he looks like next to his average-height fellow actors).

Oh yeah for sure, listed actor heights are not to be trusted because short actors and tall actors lie about that all the time so they can get more work because the entertainment industry is weird about so many things.

(Though I get that some of it is going to be an issue of keeping all actors in the same frame, it's still a bit daft).

My favorite 'we have to keep the actors both in frame and there's a nine inch height difference between them' wasn't 'put the short guy on a box', it was 'tall guy crouches down to be at eye level with his little buddy at all times'-- including in the long shots, where they'd both be in frame (but of course you couldn't always use a box and the inconsistency would be glaring if you have a guy on a box in the close-ups and then suddenly you see two guys walking along with a dramatic height difference)

Like... just look at the characters

This! Even if you've never partook of the actual fandom source and just like to write fic or create art or whatever, the very minimum you could do is look at a picture or two of the damn characters.
