Inspired by #4 - what brings you joy?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What show or book etc brings you simple uncomplicated pure joy? Do you join the fandom for that or do you just savor the joy on your own?

I am very much like OP up there and if something brings me pure happy joy then I tend to hold it close and savor it and not look for fandom or other people to share it with. I just bask in my own little joy bubble.

Middle Earth. Any version, honestly. Books top. But I'm just happy to be in Middle Earth.

Doctor Who is one for me. Star Wars. Babylon 5. But Middle Earth is always top.

The Legend of Heroes games! The last time I ventured into the fandom, there was a ton of misogyny (felt like I stepped into a time machine and went back into the "girls don't play video games make me a sandwich" time) and untagged spoilers all over, so I don't participate whatsoever.

But it brings me a ton of joy. The world is so much fun to explore, each game elaborates on not just your party's story but the stories of each NPC you meet (watching two NPCs slowly flirt with each other, then get married 2 70 hour games later was a bright moment), and the characters!! There's something to like about everyone, from outfit to personal character development to how much ass they kick on a regular basis.

I really like Travis Baldree's Legends & Lattes and Bookshops & Bonedust books and I have not ventured into fandom to see what they think.

I also got so much joy out of playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Origins. I just loved those games so much. So much fun all the way up to the very end. I dipped my toe online once to share that joy and found looooots of hate so backed away fast and now just enjoy them on my own.

It used to be Doctor Who, but we parted ways some years back and the way the show has gone has robbed me of the joy I felt even with the older parts.

I don't know that anything truly does, to be honest, I'm not one of those people who can ignore parts of a franchise that I don't like. I have to take it all or nothing. I don't like that, but that is just how I am.

I guess, the Deadpool films still bring me joy.

I can be like that. It is why I am now very selective and careful about the information I take in with things I'm enjoying. Ignorance is bliss, and all that.

Kinda hard to do that with Who. Even if you can dodge the constant press releases and newspaper articles, you cannot dodge the showrunners shoving their new stuff into the old stuff to deliberately "re-contextualise" it, plus there are some activist fans who delight in getting right up in your face and screaming at you if you even try to do anything less than embrace the godawful mess it has become as if it is a moral failing to not like what they demand you like.

Right now?

Crafting.

Dead Boy Detectives fanfic. Serious great writers in the fandom right now.

Circa 2014 MCU fanfic. It was so hopeful and fun!

I’ve already read three books this year and am pleased with the progress on the tbr pile.

Only Murders in the Building recently. Generally, fanfiction. I just enjoy reading a good fic that I know will have a happy ending. A good contrast from all the original fiction I read.

I am living a life of appreciation for the "angst with a happy ending" and "happy ending" tags. It used to just be a gamble, because I do like my angst but damn do I need that happy ending these days.

The only time I don't want a happy ending is when I'm reading horror fics (which are hard to find).

Sonic. It's been part of my life since I was 11 years old in 1996 and it's still part of my life today in many ways. I avoid certain parts of the fandom because I'm only in it for the friendship and adventure.

One Piece. For about 20 years now.

I don't really do fandom though and being a shonen manga, there are huge parts of the fandom that would seriously piss me off.

The Food Network seasonal baking shows.

Kids Baking Championship
Spring Baking Championship
Summer Baking Championship
Halloween, Holiday...all of them!

It feels so wholesome, and eager, and joyful and uncomplicated.

I like all of those except the kids. I like the holiday one too, I've been watching that a lot lately.

The older parts of the MCU, and my comics trade paperbacks of stories I loved as a kid.

British panel shows

(Anonymous) 2025-01-06 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I love them, but I am particularly fond of the year end shows. I just finished watching The Big Fat Quiz of the Year and enjoyed myself immensely. Some of the jokes go over my head because I'm not British, but I still have a lot of fun watching.

I just love the vibe of them. Because no one really cares about the points it's just a bunch of funny people hanging out and some thematic frame to keep them all in the same line.

I love British panel shows in general, and same re: not always getting the jokes. It's just something they do so much better than Americans (said the wistful American) and I don't know if it's because it's not really a competition (and everyone knows this) or if they just have more witty people than we do or what.

I’m a big fan too!

Already enjoyed BFQ of the Year 2024 and really looking forward to BFQ of Everything 2025. (I’m waiting until my housemate gets back from a trip so we can watch together.)

The Murderbot Diaries.

Lord of the Rings (book-version). I like the Peter Jackson-films, but the book has my heart.

Discworld.

Heel Holland Bakt (Dutch version of The Great British Bake Off).

Seanan McGuire's InCryptid-series.
