dry lips

that time of year again here, anyone have advice? chapstick doesn't work too well for me, idk why. got a humidifier running but it's not helping much

Re: dry lips

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
What kind of chapstick are you using? Make sure you are drinking a ton of water. And use a vaseline based lip protector at night before bed.

Re: dry lips

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Drink lots of water and steer clear of salty foods, keep yourself as hydrated as possible to reduce drying out of the skin.

Re: dry lips

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Drink more water and apply Vaseline if you really need it. Don’t bother with anything other than just plain old petroleum jelly; the lip balms and sticks and everything else are just marketing ploys.

I find that gel-form "chapsticks" work better than actual chapstick.

Re: dry lips

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I use Burts Bees lip balm. Might be a little pricey compared to chapstick though. I like the peppermint but there are other... flavors? as well.

Get chapstick that does NOT have petrolatum in it. Petrolatum will dry your lips out.

What I do that has helped: Warm air humidifier next to the bed overnight on high and a layer of chapstick* covered by aquaphor on the lips. If I happen to wake up in the night to pee or whatever, another layer of aquaphor goes on.

Also make sure you are drinking enough to stay extra hydrated.

*and by 'chapstick' I mean the general term not the specific brand.

Re: dry lips

Are you using the regular or medicated chapstick? And applying it regularly, and NOT licking your lips? That and staying hydrated are basically the only effective things that really work. Humidifiers can only do so much.

Re: dry lips

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
You just have to keep applying. There are times of my day when I'm coating my lips every 5 minutes. Like, whenever they feel dry.

Re: dry lips

(Anonymous) 2025-01-06 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm rather picky with lip balms. Most feel too thin on my lips and/or don't hydrate my lips well.

Chapstick/Blistex/Aquaphor Lip Repair/Sun Bum = thin slide on that irritates my lips more than hydrate them

Carmex = OK but it can slide off rather easily

Burt's Bees = thick coverage but does not feel hydrating

I liked Wet n Wild's So Pouty Lip Balms but they can be hard to find (they have other Lip balms/tints but I don't like them)

Smith's Rosebud Salve works nice but they come in the containers where you rub a finger to the salve and some people may not like that

Aquaphor's Healing Ointment used on lips works wonders (again their lip specific products SUUUUUUUUUUUCK)

Expensive brands like Laneige or Jack Black are pretty good stuff but really pricey.

From what I can remember, Nivea lip balms were thin and didn't last long either.
Just, soooooooo disappointing when I buy a lip balm and it's thin and doesn't do shit for my lips.

I drink lots of water, avoid salty stuff and apply olive oil in the morning and evening. Also I cover my lips with a scarp or a mask when I'm outside and the air is particularly cold and dry.

Gun help.

That one thing

[personal profile] philstar22 2025-01-05 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
What is one thing (or a few things) that bugs you with a fandom you otherwise love?

Re: That one thing

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't really fandom, but I am currently reading a fantasy book that is otherwise a lovely read but the author keeps inserting gendered ideals and terms that don't need to be there. Like the women all wear "modest" dresses, and instead of a general 'kids' she singles out boys as being hyper and full of questions while the girls are just non-existent. Just silly things but they're not needed at all for the story and it just feels weird to have sexism in a fantasy world this (female) author has created. It is otherwise a good read so far but this one nitpick is bugging me.

Everybody I come across in the Sonic fandom just seems to care about shipping him with Shadow. I wish I could find likeminded Sonic fans that don't give two shits about ships.

Re: That one thing

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I have never been in a fandom where the non-Latin usage of the word "cum" is as prevalent as in Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss.

It's my most hated word in the English language.

I could forgive it in dialogue for certain characters, but when it's used in the narrative? Proof that god really doesn't exist.

Bonus: "Cum" is awful and needs to stop. "Cumming" is an atrocity. But "cummed" is the greatest crime against the English language and I genuinely muted the author on AO3 just for writing it. Zero regrets.

Re: That one thing

When people don't question anything, or question everything, as if there is no in-between.

Like if there was a bad or wildly contradictory writing decision that people just accept as fact without regard for established canon. Or if there is some event that is very left-field, or poorly built up for the end result to make sense.

Or if they don't think at all about the story overall and just assume anything they don't personally like is a bad decision.

I get that sometimes it can be hard to tell which is which, especially when we might interpret canon in different ways. But it's like some folks don't want to apply any real thinking.

Non-canon poly as the answer to, well, anything. If it's OOC it's OOC!

Inspired by #4 - what brings you joy?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
What show or book etc brings you simple uncomplicated pure joy? Do you join the fandom for that or do you just savor the joy on your own?

I am very much like OP up there and if something brings me pure happy joy then I tend to hold it close and savor it and not look for fandom or other people to share it with. I just bask in my own little joy bubble.

A very specific vent

(Anonymous) 2025-01-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)

I have been in banking for my entire adult life. I don't dislike it, or I'd be gone, but my goodness, are there things I've reached a breaking point on.

No, the bank did not randomly change your PIN or your online banking password on you. You forgot it, or you made a mistake and entered it in wrong. Oh, you couldn't possibly have done that? Sorry; I didn't realize you were the one perfect person to have born in the history of humanity.

No, we cannot keep your debit card open if there have been fraudulent charges on it, or if it has shown up on a compromised list (which means that it's been found on a dark web storefront). I don't care that it's hard to have to update your card everywhere. Someone has the number and is using it to take your money. Either that, or they will be using it very soon. Why does the inconvenience of updating your card with Amazon outweigh the inconvenience of losing all of your funds and having to fill out claim paperwork to try and get it back?

No, it's not fraud if you bought something but changed your mind. Yes, you have to try to return the merchandise to the company, and see if they'll give you a refund. No, the fact that we're your bank doesn't mean that you can use us to buy stuff, keep it, and then dispute the charge, thereby getting it for free. By the way, people like you are why it's gotten harder for people with legitimate disputes to get their funds back.

Hey, buddy. We called you ten times, sent you five emails, and mailed you three letters. That was us trying to notify you about the problem with your account. "Well, you still should have told me." Okay. But how?

Yes, we have to positively identify you before you withdraw from or make changes to your account. No, the fact that you know your name, social security number, and home address doesn't mean that you are who you say you are. Who else would know that information, you ask? An identity thief. I guarantee you'll change your tune if that shit happens to you (and you'll be damn mad at the institution that didn't make the thief jump through the hoops that we're making you jump through right now). Hope it doesn't happen, though, because it sucks.

If the post office didn't deliver your loan bill on time, then you still have to pay it. If you forgot that you signed up for electronic billing, then you still have to pay it. If you're having a hard time making ends meet, then we can absolutely help you, but "the bill didn't reach me, so I thought I didn't have to pay this month" is not an excuse. You are told your due date, and the amount that's due each month, when you sign your loan note.

Loans have interest rates. We tell you what your interest rate is both when you're approved for your loan and when you sign for it. Do you know what that means? It means that you'll be charged interest on the funds we've lent to you! And yes, you have to pay it! "I didn't know you were going to charge me interest, so I think you should waive that" is not a valid argument.

If you don't pay your loan, we have the right to collect the funds from you. We are not "doing whatever we want" with money. You took our money, and you have to pay it back! That's what a fucking loan is!

And I could go on, and on, and on...

Driving Lessons

(Anonymous) 2025-01-06 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Anon who posted awhile ago about starting adult driving lessons despite having pretty bad driver anxiety. I just passed my driving test! I made only a few mistakes. Lol, I went from too scared to get behind the wheel for the first half hour of my first lesson to passing my driving test on the first try. Thanks everyone here who said encouraging things.
