I genuinely don't know what fandom social mores are nowadays, and with the prevalence of huge fandom drama regardless of size (not to mention how different types of fandoms can be, ex. Star Trek vs. Granblue Fantasy), I'm too afraid to ask and don't know where to begin.

I wish it wasn't so complicated.

I find being old and out of fucks to be tremendously helpful. Not having social media, also helpful. However, if you want fandom to be comments, tiktoks, discord chats, and other interactions, avoiding social media and doing your own thing clearly won't help.

Fandom is what you make of it, so you can consume (and provide!) fic, art, meta, memes, cosplay, RP, character playlists, special tea blends, whatever, without the social aspect. But if you want the social aspect, then you have a choice whether to try to adapt to what the kids are doing, or just give no fucks and do your own thing. Honestly? IDK what fandom mores aren't covered by the general sense of behaving like a human being and not being an asshole, so if you've got that much self-awareness, you're fine. Right?

Nonny, I took learning fandom social mores a lot more seriously when it felt like they served some practical social purpose. When they promoted trust and appreciation, as opposed to compulsive policing.

These days, it feels a lot more like being caught in the crossfire of a bunch of egotists trying to amass influence and sell themselves as trendsetters and people-persuaders, and I am disgusted with all of them. Mind you, that's not what I think fandom as a whole is about. But the people climbing on soapboxes and trying to claim the moral high ground for themselves and some behavior norm they attempt to popularize tend to be scum of the worst sort. They are unworthy of time and attention, and none of the things they insist people "have" to do here are at all necessary. My advice to you would be to read the fics, enjoy the free art, write and draw whatever you want, and interact with the people who've shown they can handle strangers saying perfectly normal things to them by being friendly and sane in reply. They continue to be everywhere, in fandom, they're just a lot less loud than the people who are unpleasant.

Honestly I find that whenever fandom boils something down to buzzwords: wholesome, toxic yuri/yaoi, sunshine/grumpy, it strips away the actual dynamic of whatever the ship/character is into a cookie cutter dynamic and set of personalities that become incredibly samey and dull.
