Some peoples understanding of morality is that actions are completely irrelevant and instead evil is such things as; having a penis, your skin tone, how you worship, or if you have money.

True. I don't get why people take other people's religious beliefs or lack thereof so personally. Then again, I don't understand why anyone gets so offended about anything that isn't hurting anyone.

To be fair, skepticism that can lead to atheism hurts the numbers for more dominionist sects of Christianity. So for them there is a sense of hurt involved.

If your beliefs require you to try to force your religion on everyone else and take it personally when people disagree, there is something wrong with your beliefs.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
DA

That's in theory any religion that has a 'hell' though. If you are a decent person and think your loved ones, or anyone else at all, might be headed toward eternal torment, the only moral thing according to your beliefs would be to try to 'save' them through any means possible because what's worse than eternal damnation?

Lots of religious people like to pretend the concept of 'hell' doesn't exist in their system, but it does; they're just ignoring a huge important part of the religion they say they are part of.

There are also many different versions of most religions. Like some versions of Christianity say hell isn't torment, it is simply ceasing to exist while everyone else gets to live on forever. Other versions have other takes.

All religions have versions. As far as I know there isn't any religion that doesn't have offshoots.

And it'd be nice if more people followed those, but generally they don't

Oh I agree, unfortunately. There are far too many hateful, prejudiced, awful people, unfortunately. I'm just saying that there are versions that aren't that. You don't have to buy into that stuff if you are religious.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Eh.

Not sure the idea that 'hell only = cease to exist' changes anything, unfortunately. If everyone has the chance for eternal life but may die a 'permanent death' then you're still morally obligated to save as many people as possible. 'I don't have to try to save them, they only die forever if I don't' changes the factor of badness, but not what the moral imperative would be for a person who considers themselves good.

You wouldn't look at someone about to jump off a cliff and go 'it's okay, they only die forever, that's not such a bad fate'

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Trying to force other people to live their life the way you (the general you) think it ought to be lived is immoral. Trying to tack on "because I know better than them, I just happen to have the TRUTH" does not make it any less of a dick move.

Religious people are human. They are fallible. No matter how *fervently* they believe anything, they are not guaranteed to be right. They fail in their actual obligation to treat other human beings with respect and decency when they try, by hook or crook, to get everyone to agree with their beliefs.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Shrug. I'm not religious. I'm also not arguing whether they are moral or not from your perspective, but that would be the only thing that makes logical sense from their perspective if they truly believe that it's a difference between eternal life and damnation and/or final death. In any religion that has a 'hell', if that is supposedly real then they're morally obliged to try to save people.

Lots of religious people ignore that part of religion though because that's inconvenient.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
+ lots of people who are apologists for religion ignore that 'nice' religious people are ignoring that part.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds like that might be your understanding of morality. I really hope it's not, because it desperately lacks nuance.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
DA How so?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
OP's possible position or how the position lacks nuance?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, unfortunately.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I hate people equally.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 03:40 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations, you have discovered prejudice.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
You must be real fun at parties

(Anonymous) 2025-01-15 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, but how you worship is an action and if part of your worship is spewing hate at others, telling others they'll go to hell because they aren't worshipping right, trying to control or manipulate others, covering up for sexual abusers, etc. then, yeah, I'm going to call that immoral.

If you have money, well, it sort of depends how you got it, because there are really a lot of immoral ways to have made serious money.
