I mean, if he was just tipping change then it's just as likely that he's like a lot of people and doesn't like carrying around coins. However, in general the only time I think it makes sense to tip at Starbucks is if you're ordering multiple drinks in one go or if you're ordering something that's heavily customized.

No, that would make sense. He would usually get several dollars back and put them in the jar, and he just got plain black coffee so it's not like it was even anything complicated. It was always weird to me since it's not like my parents were rich and he would go to Starbucks literally every day (sometimes twice a day on Saturdays) and leave tips. But he finally stopped the tips after my mom yelled at him for it and he doesn't go to Starbucks that often anymore, anyway.
