What is your favorite piece of media that you think no one else here has seen/read/played?

Who has seen/read/played that thing?

The book I bring up here from time to time: Peeled by Joan Bauer. (I'd also nominate Thwonk, another Joan Bauer book.)

there were two kids' shows on TV in the 70's that are never mentioned when people talk about that stuff and I was obsessed with them as a kid. One of them was called the Curiosity Shop and the other one was an animated version of Edward Lear/Lewis Carroll poetry called Tomfoolery. All I could find on youtube was a very blurry black and white ep of the former and ten minutes of the latter, and neither seems to have ever had a release on DVD or anything else.

One of my favorite comedies, Lone Star State Of Mind. It is so friggin' funny and my family loves it.

For books, Dr. Mutter's Marvels: A True Tale of Intrigue and Innovation at the Dawn of Modern Medicine by Cristin O'Keefe Aptowicz. It is such an interesting non-fiction book. I read it before my trip to Philly and the Mutter Museum.

Shadow by Anne Logston

I picked this book up at a yard sale years ago and it has become a favorite and I am so curious about the author. She wrote a handful more books in the same universe then just disappeared. I don't know anyone else who has heard of or read this book.

The official summary:
Never trust an elf, a thief, or a woman. Shadow is all three... Shadow, a light-hearted (and light-fingered) elven thief, returns to her homeland after several centuries' absence only to find that a great human trade city has grown up next to the forest in which she was born. Now the elves and the humans maintain an uneasy alliance, but when Shadow steals a magical bracelet, she finds herself caught in the middle of a plot that may tear the city-and the alliance-apart forever.

The playstation 2 trilogy of Xenosaga games lmao. These three games are my all time favs and they're never remembered.

(This is not helped by the fact that, for whatever reason, they're not even available to buy on the playstation store or anything. It's literally PS2 discs, emulation, or bust.)

For books, Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton. It's basically a Victorian romance novel. But everyone is dragons.

Fuga: Melodies of Steel.

A turn based tactical JRPG about cat and dog children fighting against Nazi dog people using a tank that's also an eldritch abomination that uses souls as a last ditch weapon of mass destruction. It's definitely not for everyone, but it is so good.

I love that they sing the whole thing, I love that it's so short, I love that it's so ridiculous.

And the songs are bangers, what can I say.

Seen: From my childhood, Henry's Cat, I at least can't find the specific dub from my childhood, though some searching has turned up the other English language dub...
Transylvania 6-5000 some people might have seen but it's a niche favorite.
The 5,000 Fingers of Doctor T is one of those ones that sounds like a fever dream if I try to describe it to anyone but it was BIG for me when I was a kid...

Read: Again for childhood favorites, Sir Hamm and the Golden Sundial was one of those books I read over and over (and over, and over...) again.
Half Magic I only read once, but it really stuck with me.
Time Cat

Played: Rogue Galaxy
the original Genesis Bubsy the Bobcat
Cool Spot (also a Genesis game)

Weekend Plans?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2025-01-25 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
What is everyone doing this weekend?

Should be pretty chill where I am. We don't expect any bad weather so hopefully I can get a nice walk in (without nearly breaking my ass on ice). I've also got to crochet. I've been pretty good about crocheting at least once a week.

It's hard for me to imagine you nearly breaking your ass on ice. I'm my mind, you're like super-stealth or something? LOL Must be your avatars.

I had to go to a baby shower tomorrow night, and it got canceled, so I'll be celebrating that all weekend. And maybe finally doing the wardrobe purge I should have done in September.

This is my last night of travel for work, so weekend plans are flights home Saturday and then laze about on Sunday. And by laze about I guess mean unpack, do laundry, get groceries for the week, etc. (I just realized I'd have to do all that to be ready for work Monday. I was hoping for actual lazing.)

Locking my phone in a box for self care's sake, and catching up on movies and crafts. It turns out that there's a type of cloth that allows you to cross stitch on clothing without leaving the intermediary backing fabric visible, so I'm going to try that out by stitching some flowers on an old sweatshirt.

Crochet is fun; what are you crocheting this week?

My work is hosting an event with cocktail dress-code I have to attend, but I do not own anything even resembling office clothes lol. So I need to go shopping I think.
Also I am going to have a massage at last, yay. Much needed.
Debating on further plans. The weather have been an absolute shit the whole January. We supposed to have snow! And proper cold! Not whatever the hell we are having

How to write book reviews?

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2025-01-25 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
So, my goal this year is to read 12 books (got two done so far) and I'm thinking of writing reviews to add to my tumblr. I'm hoping that this will help me remember them better.

I know this is a stupid problem, but I don't really know how to talk about the stuff I read. It's just like..."This is good." "This is bad."

Any advice on how to write one? How to pick out things to write about?

Goodreads review etiquette

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
The book reviews question reminded me. I recently finished a book written by an acquaintance, and it's also their debut novel. I would say it's a 4 star book, which is pretty good, but I've noticed that reviews on Goodreads tend to go for the full 5 stars when the reviewer is a friend of the author. Is this just the way it's expected to be done? Would it be a faux pas to give the book 4 stars instead of 5 when I know the person?

Does anyone know if there is a DW page style that will wrap long subject lines?

(Anonymous) 2025-01-25 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Because I’m real damn tired of the comment text becoming microscopic because people don’t know how to make subject lines that are a reasonable length.
