Yeah, to me there's a big difference on a commercial level. Like, if someone was awful and they're dead, go for it. But if someone is a shit and they're alive, fuck no I'm not giving them a single cent, and I'm not talking about what they mean to me either.

Otherwise, I wish I could separate the art from the artist better. Like the works of Marion Zimmer Bradley (child abuser as well as a child abuse enabler for her pedophile husband) meant a lot to me but since I found that out, I just can't.

I try to separate the art (financial support notwithstanding-- I have less problems coming to terms with dead artists) but sometimes the enjoyment is just utterly negated. When Dave Sim went on a tear about the "female void" and its inherent drain on creativity, I just figured that meant he would be happier if I no longer read his books. Freed up a couple feet of shelf space, too.

Adding on this a bit: I still like the poem "Instructions" despite Neil Gaiman, but oh if there was a way to make sure only Charles Vess got any proceeds from the book...

yeah, i think its fair for people to grieve when new information fundamentally changes how you feel about something.
