The thing that frustrates me with this debate is that it basically ordains people to take the time to find out stuff about the artist in the first place.

It's entirely possible to consume a piece of media without knowing the first thing about the people involved in creating it, but so much of the Internet now, both sides of the "separate art from artist" debate, begin their points with the presumption that you're obligated to find out everything you can about the artist and then either go full social-justice-boycott or actively choose to separate the art from their personal lives.

The secret third option - that it's perfectly fine to just quietly enjoying a piece of art on its own merits, without ever bothering to learn anything about the artist at all - never actually makes it into the discussion.

Well, I think people do kind of feel an obligation to research the artist nowadays because it's difficult to randomly talk about media online without someone coming along giving you a life lesson about why you shouldn't have consumed it in the first place. That's best case scenario. Worst case, you didn't realize the creator was a literal nazi, and now you are an apologist and [insert whatever applicable insults].

I tend to avoid talking about media I like on the internet because I don't care who made the thing and it all becomes so exhausting and joy-crushing to me when people bring the artist into it.
