Well damn. Not familiar with these books, but I love first person POV! I feel like it creates a direct intimacy between the protagonist and me, like I'm reading their diary. Not to mention the possibilities for unreliable narration. I'm fine not identifying with the narrator or even pulling for them, as long as they're telling a story that convinces me it's their version of events as would logically be experienced through their lens based on the author's characterization. Maybe that makes it tricky to write, and people get burned on it one too many times?

ANYWAY. Based on the covers of these books alone, I wouldn't go into them expecting superlative writing, regardless of the POV. They look like a niche series catering to readers looking for a guilty-pleasure, kind of mindless enjoyment, which is obviously 100% legit.

This is such a bizarre comment. The OP is all, "these books are stunningly well-written despite featuring a POV that I dislike" and your reaction, "ah yes, I could have guessed that they were poorly written based on the covers, and obviously I was correct!"

NAYRT

Unfortunately, a common misconception about books like these (that is: fantasy novels with a hefty page count) is that they're trashily written, whatever that means.

I think the same misconception is why a lot of people tend to either look down on or just... avoid fanfics with a 900k+ wordcount. 'Anyone who needs THAT many words to tell a story has to have abysmal storytelling skills!' etc. etc.

Are you basing your remarks about the covers on just the SPINES? Spines are rarely engaging, that's not what they are for. The original British covers for the books with art by John Howe are gorgeous (as are the US ones by the legendary Michael Whelan, plus Stephen Youll), especially the Liveship series ones IMHO. See here: https://fitzandthefool.livejournal.com/129431.html
So many covers look bland these days, including the newer editions of Hobbs' books, but the older ones are not among them!
