I think this is very clearly about when you know an author or creator is a sack of shit. If you don't know they are then you don't know and the damage is done, but if you know they're fucking awful and still give them money if they're alive. Then yeah frankly you don't actually care about them being a sack of shit as much as you might claim to and instead want to avoid social ire.
