i care if they separate the artist from the money.

So honest question... say you're in a bookstore, and a cover catches your eye, and the excerpt seals the deal, but you've never heard of the author. Do you stop and google before you buy the book to ensure they're not problematic?

How about libraries? Should they refuse to purchase works by living creators who are problematic?

Like, where does it stop? Who decides what level of purity is required to make a purchase acceptable?

I think this is very clearly about when you know an author or creator is a sack of shit. If you don't know they are then you don't know and the damage is done, but if you know they're fucking awful and still give them money if they're alive. Then yeah frankly you don't actually care about them being a sack of shit as much as you might claim to and instead want to avoid social ire.

yes like anon above me says i am clearly talking about art, individuals, and foreknowledge. like the the trigger here is someone, a person, asking themselves if they need to separate art and artist.

Like, where does it stop? Who decides what level of purity is required to make a purchase acceptable?
you decide? and then if you exist in a society where your decisions are known and people will treat you differently based on them, you decide with that knowledge too. i don't know if you know this but the people who are going to judge you on your purchases already do so based on whatever criteria they want, and you get to decide whether their judgement is worth engaging with, ignoring, or changing yours. everybody gets a choice.
