Before I knew about Palmer's own questionable behavior, I gave that relationship the side-eye for the 16 year age gap alone but people right here on FS were all "but they're ADULTS!!!" Yeah. Still looks hinky to me, though. But I assumed that Gaiman was having a pathetic mid-life crisis thing and dating a much younger woman with a penchant for nudity didn't reflect well on him, but they were consenting adults and all.

When I learned about Palmer's fake suicide and the million dollar Kickstarter followed by trying to get out of paying musicians was super dodgy. Her poem about the Boston bomber was super cringe. Gaiman had a much more presentable public face, but I did think... huh. He's okay with all that, hmmm? Then I find out that he's the worse of the two, which was a hell of a surprise.

Hand-wringing about age gaps for anyone over the age of 30 is legitimately silly.

"Looks hinky" =/= handwringing

Well, thinking it "looks hinky" is also silly.

The only people I know who use the word "hinky" in real life are my Trump-supporting aunt and uncle. So I think use of the word "hinky" is pretty hinky. Perhaps you were raised with some internalized right-wing values that you still hold subconsciously.

what

Age gaps all on their own aren't inherently bad, sure. But they're a common thing in abusive/toxic relationships. Interpreting it as a red flag isn't necessarily wrong.

One red flag does not a shitty relationship make, but viewing it as a reason to be extra critical is valid.
