ereaders

Do you have one? Do you like it? If you are a kindle user have you thought about an alternative to break away from Amazon?

I had a kindle when they first came out and loved it (amazing for travel) but haven't had one in forever. Looking at getting a Pocketbook as an alt but I am indecisive. I definitely need the e-ink for long reading sessions.

I had a Kobo years ago and it was a pain to use. Pocketbook and Boox are supposed to be the best non Kindle ereaders. Personally, I love my Kindles. Using the Kindle store is just so much faster and easier than having to hunt and import content. And I can still hunt and import content if I want. I have Amazon Prime so I get a free book every month to own plus I can borrow books. I also pay like $10 a month for Kindle Unlimited and it’s worth it for me. I read about $15 worth of included content every month. There are also a ton of indie authors who published via Amazon so their work isn’t available anywhere else.

I have a kindle, I haven't used it in a while mostly because I haven't read much in a while.

I don’t have a dedicated e-reader, but I like my iPad mini. I have Libby and Cloud Library on it, plus some manga apps, but I don’t read on it for long stretches of time because I prefer physical books.

I have a Kobo (Clara Color) and utterly adore it, though my personal setup is a bit complicated. Out of the box Kobos aren't very intuitive to use, especially if your main source of books is from the library or a non-Kobo storefront like Amazon. I use Calibre to rip out the DRM so I can read books from any storefront on my device (as well as store and maintain info on books, articles, magazines, fanfic, etc.) and do cable transfers from my desktop to the e-reader for direct file management. For that purpose, it's great!

I've heard great things about Boox but have never used one myself.

I’m the anon above who had a Kobo years ago. I used Calibre the same way and I admit the reader is great for its versatility. But I got it after using Kindle for years so I hated having to do all that work and decided to go back to Kindle.

I've never had one, but I have tried looking into getting something for the sole purpose of saving and reading fanfiction on.
I'm still in the research stage and keeping an eye out at the local second-hand electronic store, but it's mostly been old kindles so far - although I've heard there's a way to repurpose old kindle for what I want without having to connect it with Amazon, but it also sounds like more work than I'm willing to put in.

I use my Kobo Libra constantly as it keeps me from scrolling aimlessly on my phone. Calibre and Overdrive have felt super easy to set-up and use, but I actually use it more often to read longform journalism. I hooked it up to Pocket so I can just click when I'm using my PC to send articles from webpages (I also use this method for Ao3, at least for oneshots or shorter works where I don't need or care for chapter breaks).

I have a kindle which I've used for years and I love it, but I'd love to get a Boox ereader at some point, they look so swish and fancy in a way that appeals to me but the price point is somewhat eeek as nice as they look.

I am debating between a Boox and a kindle right now. I love the idea of an android based device where I can have the kindle app but choose to read in other ecosystems as well, but most of what I'm reading says the kindle (I'm looking at the paperwhite) just has a better reading experience in general and is way cheaper. Ugh decisions decisions.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite and also a Kindle Basic. The Basic was a gift for me to carry on trips but it’s become my primary. It isn’t much smaller yet it’s weirdly way more portable. And it feels sturdier than the Paperwhite. I don’t use a case for it, I just put a screen protector on and I’ll toss it into my purse/suitcase/backpack or even my pocket without worrying about it. It’s been about 4-5 months and the thing doesn’t have a single ding or dent. And if something happens to it, it’s a much more affordable replacement than the Paperwhite or Boox.
