The what reveal now? Everything about LA Garp is WRONG.

Poor Smoker. I honestly thought they were cutting him as a character because everything about him was applied to Garp, but now he's actually showing up. He won't be shit thanks to that. I'm not surprised Oda clamped his mouth shut about the changes, he clearly didn't approve of that.

Except he was heavily involved. Cope and seethe.

In what?

In the original manga, Garp only showed up in a cover story wherein he took Koby and Helmeppo under his wing, which is, yes, technically canon by Oda's standards but also was not actually part of the storyline of the manga nor the anime (which showed parts of the cover story but not all of it). Garp's presence in the entire East Blue arc plus the beginning of the Grand Line is background only. Tangential. Him being revealed as Luffy's grandpa didn't happen until Water Seven a full 500 chapters into the manga.

Revealing it early? A cute nod to the fandom but also unnecessary. Fleshing him out as Javert to Luffy's Valjean is assassinating both characters and the underlying theme of One Piece. I will seethe at your wrongness but you can cope with being wrong.

Yes, exactly, that's my point. In the original, if you missed the cover stories and just plain forgot since they happened years ago, Garp was just some random dude who suddenly appeared in the story. Sure, it was pretty insane that a Marine Vice Admiral is Luffy's granddad, but there wasn't anything specific about it being Garp that was insane. Any of the Vice Admiral's involved in the Buster Call could have turned out to be Luffy's family and it would have hit harder since they were actually part of the story at this point.

Which is why I like the LA reveal better. Garp has been part of the show from the get-go, the audience has an emotional connection because it seems as though he's the bad guy after our loveable main. And then the understanding of the character just gets turned on its head with the reveal.

Having watched the LA with multiple people who hadn't seen/read One Piece before, the reveal was set up and executed really really well.

Just to be clear

In the live action.

https://gamerant.com/one-piece-oda-confirms-involvement-live-action-season-2/#:~:text=Oda%20personally%20went%20through%20casting,success%20partially%20because%20of%20him.

"Oda personally went through casting choices and picked the ones he thought represented his characters perfectly. He went through the scripts, and scrapped ideas he deemed unfit for the show. Oda has always been there, and One Piece Live Action season 1 was a major success partially because of him. It is his story after all, and his vision is being brought to life by all the team working on this Live Action adaptation."

You are condemning Oda with this. He rubber stamped everything.
