I think this art is really pretty.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Different strokes for different folks. Uh... out of curiosity, what other art do you consider "pretty"?

Wow, those are truly some terrible covers, and I'm someone who used to enjoy the Good Show Sir site. Either the artist wasn't told what books they were actually illustrating, or these are clip art or AI.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-27 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
I was thinking AI slop myself.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-27 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
I remember good show sir!

The colors are an eyesore, IMO. It wouldn't be too out of place for a modern AU or... some other YA story, but it's such a mismatch for Jane Austen that I can't imagine why anyone would look at it and go, "Yeah!"

(Anonymous) 2025-02-26 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, those are hideous.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-26 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Publishers really out here trying to say that yes, you can judge a book by its cover, if that judgment leads to someone buying it. Who cares if they regret it later and feel duped because they never wanted to read it, as long as you get that money.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-27 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yikes! Can you imagine reading Austen for the first time and THIS is your mental image.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-27 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Oh god I hate it so much. I can only imagine the complete and joyful snark the communities respond with and I fully understand your love/hate OP!

What's up with all the white-haired women? I guess Daenerys Targaryen still has pop culture in a chokehold. Also, I saw someone on ONTD say the Northanger Abbey cover looks like Reylo fanfic because the guy reminds them of Adam Driver, and I can't unsee it.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
................indeed it does. Indeed it does.

The ones on Sense and Sensibility actually look pink-haired to me.

The art makes me think of Meg Cabot books

The mismatching eyebrow/hair colors for 90% of the cast is driving me nuts.

I feel like if I picked up a book with a very contemporary cover like those and got hit with the period appropriate flowery language, those covers would be lying to me about the story's overall vibes.

I don't know, I think they're fun. For teen readers, they definitely look more approachable than the Very Serious Literature covers they usually have.

At first glance, I thought this was a secret about Jem and the Holograms.

I really kind of wish I bought them when I saw them; but back when the first series of Sherlock got really popular - I remember this cheap-ish book store selling Sherlock Holme books with really ugly anime-inspired art on the covers of Watson and Sherlock, that I'm pretty sure was made by the store owner himself.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-27 04:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's some unfortunate art.

I worked in a bookshop during both the Twilight & the 50 Shades craze, and there was a lot of releasing classics with tie-in covers
for Twilight, Wuthering Heights got rereleased with "Bella & Edwards' favourite book" stamped on the cover, with a Twilight-esq design, and Romeo & Juliet got the same treatment. Found a pic here: https://preview.redd.it/somebody-else-posted-on-twitter-v0-o3j5pqkg1gge1.jpeg?auto=webp&s=026bd66822b13f3c5de4b9d5972d639c669e2363

For 50 Shades, a few of Anaïs Nin's books was rereleased with a 50 Shades style cover, and I think maybe Fear of Flying?

I'm not an Austen fan and I feel offended by those covers.

I've already been noticing how terrible most run-of-the-mill sorts of product designs are (like candy brands as an example). It's fucking everywhere.

Slop sold as the norm, this is what we get when convenience is the norm. Who cares if it looks good and is on theme, just put shit that looks like other shit on there and get it out there to be sold!

(Anonymous) 2025-02-27 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooof oof OOOF that's bad.

Also, I'd be SO PISSED if I picked up a romance with a POC man on the front and got a British Aristocrat. I love Mr. Darcy, but that's fraud. Call the FTC.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-27 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I like it. There are far worse things teenaged girls could be reading than Jane Austen.
