Do you consider cash money to be "real" money?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-28 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
I don't. I rarely have cash and when I do, it is someone paying me back. And that money isn't factored into any of my bills or if I am debating making a big purchase or something. It's play money.

Yes. But I often get paid back for work expenses in cash so I have to calculate it into my budgetting.

I had a previous job where they would pay me random bonuses in cash and that wasn't "real money" but fun money I spent guilt free on hobbies.

I'm with you. I almost never have cash, but when I do I feel the same way as you, it's not factored into bills so I can do whatever I want with it and it doesn't matter.

I’m kinda the same. It isn’t factored into my budget or anything. Once it’s withdrawn from the account, it ceases to exist. But it’s also used for particular things and those purchases can be in the hundreds of dollars. We’ve filled our home with antique furniture and most buys either come from facebook marketplace or tiny antique shops where they have a surcharge for card purchases. If I’m paying $580 for a chest of drawers, I prefer to not spend an extra $30 just because I didn’t stop at the ATM en route.

well I'm poor so all money is money.

Yes, and it's frustrating that the government is trying to phase out cash. Especially living somewhere that often has connectivity issues.

I am extremely concerned about the government phasing out cash. One major week-long power outage would prove catastrophic.

(Anonymous) 2025-02-28 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, we had a 3-day power outage a few months ago (and often have 2-3 hour outages and very often connectivity issues) and everyone with cash was fine.

Uh...cash money is pretty much the *only* real money. Online money or debit cards all go to shit if you can't access them. But a 20 is always a 20.

+1

Currently without a debit card because mine was stolen by a drive thru cashier. (They literally did not return it to me and then used it. They were super weird with the transaction, so I didn't realize they hadn't returned it until later that day.)

It's been enlightening to use cash. Like - breaking a twenty is a big deal when you only have $40 on you. Thinking about moving back to cash for in-person transactions.

I used to pay ALL my bills in cash or postal money order. It really hit home to see a stack of cash just vanish into envelopes.

If i have a 100 or 50 or even 20 dollar bill, i'm so reluctant to break it. Once it's broken, it's gone. I feel like, for me, cash keeps me from spending as easily and quickly.

There is a reason so much budgeting advice says to use cash (and break it down into envelopes). It really helps to actually see the physical money going away as you spend it. Or the rewarding feeling of seeing it pile up as you save!

This.

Exactly this!

I rarely have cash on me unless I've been paid to dog sit

Yes, but I am over 40, so I didn't have a credit card or pay by phone when I was a teen.

I do because that's all I use. I only use my card for stuff like getting a new passport or paying utility bills because there's no alternative.

Yes, why would I not?

Re: Do you consider cash money to be "real" money?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-28 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
No. Once cash is pulled out of the bank it's been "spent" it's just hanging around. Like ghost money. Poltergeist money.

What is cash money if not real money?

Re: Do you consider cash money to be "real" money?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-28 05:41 am (UTC)(link)
YES! And the problem is electronic transactions don't feel real to me. It makes impulse purchases from Evil River Company too easy. Cash is always king. It is all that is real.

Re: Do you consider cash money to be "real" money?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-28 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't. This is already a money that is spent.
And I am over 40, so I also remember cash blah blah. But the thing is, I have enough experience to know that if banks and systems are fucked, cash money is also fucked. So you all hiding your cash in a jar won't help.

Re: Do you consider cash money to be "real" money?

(Anonymous) 2025-02-28 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Based on living through a major storm: When the power grid goes down, the businesses with generators will be open with "cash only" signs.

But I'm fine with people thinking cash in jars won't help because that's one less person in line for ice and fuel.

This only works for a week or so.
I am talking as someone who lived through country collapse and several finance crushes, also people dealing in barter to survive. Also couple of robberies.
AND I actually think that having some cash on hand is beneficial.
But your precious jars really won't help you much

Not anymore. I have to do my bills online and over app, my main way of sending money to others for their bills is digitally, I cash checks via my bank's app, etc. I rarely have physical cash on me unless it's a $5-20 gift from an older relative.
