(Anonymous) 2025-03-02 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)I loved the TV episodes so much and I don’t think any other version will usurp them in my heart. I honestly like some of them better than the original stories.
But I was curious about alternate adaptions, so I tried the movies and found them so very jarring. The character choices were just too different for me.

First, you're correct. There are a couple of missteps in some of the later Suchet adaptations, some unnecessary changes that made for a slightly worse mystery, but as a character his Poirot never fails to deliver pure authenticity with Christies writing. These are the definitive Poirot.
As to the movies, the following:
Orient: Beautifully done adaptation of the mystery and the story, but with some questionable choices for his Poirot, you have to ignore some idiosyncrasies they added to Poirot (It doesn't matter if I'm covered in shit, as long as the shit is EVEN) which were departures and, imo lessened the character, but they got a lot right. Not perfect Poirot, but good enough for the story, and the Mystery was done so well with just fantastic acting from everyone - particularly Pfeifer who fucking killed it. I don't tear up at films much, but during her speech and test near the end I got chills, genuinely welled up. Oh, You also had to ignore a tacked on chase scene which was bullshit, to be honest, but not a movie killer, just stupid. Also cinematography and set was beautiful. High grade art.
Nile: Every good point raise above minus say 30% quality. A good enough mystery, with good enough acting, and passible set, Serviceable to the core. Middle of the road adaptation. But they fucked up horrendously on his Poirot. Just abysmal. They expanded on a romance that was alluded to in the first film and frankly didn't need to be, and certainly didn't need to more screentime. They gave his moustaches a tragic backstory. They had Poirot threaten a supposedly life long friend with prison for A JEWEL THEFT! In the books, he lets absolute STRANGERS off the hook for worse crimes. And Finally... They decided he needed to be Humble, learn a lesson, have a character arch... Which they showed by having him SHAVE OFF HIS MOUSTASHES to show how he is abandoning his ego. Fucking fucking sacrilege.
Halloween: All of the above, less another 30%. Story and mystery were barely ok. Poirot was lessened another 30%, but really by this point I had accepted I wasn't watching a Poirot film, just a shell. And yet they STILL found a way to make it worse than my expectations... By first casting TINA FEY as an American ARIADNE FUCKING OLIVER which is just a fucking horrendous fit. Like casting Sidney Sweeny as Miss Marple levels of miscast. And the worst of all three films - maybe on par with the "I have failed because of my vanity, I will shave off my moustaches!" from the last film - They had central to the plot Ariadne betray Poirot with the view of trying to expose him as a failure and a has-bin so she could reignite her own career. Just... re-read that last one a few times until the true butchery of it sinks in...
TL;DR You have saved yourself a world of heartbreak, and most of an afternoons watching by missing these films. You missed out on some real beautiful film making in the first, but as a Poirot fan taking the trilogy in the round... not worth it. TOTALLY not worth it.
