Ever tried something (clothes, food, activities) because of fiction?

Have you ever decided to try something because of a character or story you really liked?

I tried sandalwood deodorant. Turns out I hate sandalwood.

What media or character inspired that?

There are several fandoms where one character smells of sandalwood (both fanon and canon), most recently for me MDZS. It's practically a cliche for fandom at this point.

Nayrt but Shadowhunters often uses sandalwood as part of Magnus' scent. As someone who can't stand the smell of sandalwood, every second fic in that fandom was a tiny dagger to my heart.

Sandalwood is my favorite scent! I don't think I've ever used it as a descriptor in a fic though.

Most recently Japanese style curry, because of Persona 5.

The stuff I made may not have been Leblanc Curry, but it certainly wasn't Mystery Food X. (I've made it several times since.)

I enjoy the fact that we posted the same thing so close to each other. Heh.

Earl Grey Tea because of prim, fancy characters.

Ended up becoming a tea addict.

All the time, especially if I am attached to a particular character. Most recently I tried osmamthus tea since Zhongli has so many idle lines about osmanthus. It’s a very delicate flavor, not my favorite, but I can see why he would enjoy it.

I've always wanted tall boots because of Star Wars and LOTR characters. I finally found a pair that actually fits (super wide calves made this difficult) a few months ago. Now I feel epic when wearing them.

Well, this is only half true, but after having watched Inuyasha, I decided to take an archery class. Not bad. I found out I was left eye dominant.

I got into costuming and cosplay because I loved Maria Bjornson's designs for ALW's Phantom of the Opera. And I think I first listened to Rachmaninov because of fanfic.

Turkish Delight because of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and it was okay, but not as good as it sounded in the book. Rice pudding because it appeared in numerous works of British literature and... same.

Did you try Turkish Delight in boxes or sold in bazaar styled shops? There is a big difference.
I don't think that anything is as good as described in a magic setting but boxed Turkish Delight is a sugary shit

Re: Ever tried something (clothes, food, activities) because of fiction?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-03 09:05 am (UTC)(link)
I was child who dreamt of eating/making Turkish Delight too! And then in my early 20s got some/made some and yeah, it's just OK.
But I understand that during wartime like in LW&W, coming across something that's essentially just sugar is indeed rare and tempting.

Tried hockey/got better at skating because hockey rpf. Totally worth all the falls and stumbles cause the community of adult ice skaters are all pretty supportive.

Learned whist because of Hornblower, which I read because of a reference on MASH, though I had certainly heard of it before.

I asked for some ska albums for my birthday one year because the main character in the Meg Cabot book All-American Girl loved ska. I didn't even like the book that much, but I still thought I could use it as a good guide for what was cool with slightly rebellious girls my age.

I tried go after Hikaru no Go. It was fun. But I don't have clubs nearby so it's a bother. And I prefer backgammon anyway, but do not have anyone to play with. I am desperate enough to ask for a round local Turkish guys who play in a coffeeshop near my work

I've gone to Society of Friends (Quaker) meetings because of Turn. I like them, I'd go back if the meeting house wasn't so far away.
