That could be true. It could also be true that they like them separately as their own things for different reasons.

That's how I felt about the Branagh films I saw. I think I'm far less likely to revisit them than I am the 70s/80s films or the Suchet Poirot series, but it was interesting to see how Branagh would tweak them.

As for Christie's writing, I'm generally fine with it although from time to time the values dissonance (especially about Jewish folks or lesbians) kind of smacks you in the face.

I don't think I recall any lesbians in the books. There were a couple of times when I thought she was going in that direction, but pulled it away at the last minute with some good old fashions wholesome cousin marriage.

The one that sticks in my head was Taken at the Flood where the woman was supposed to marry man A, but thought because he didn't go to war he was too much of a pussy and instead fell for the violent psychopath. Then at the end when Christies pulling one of her classic misdirects to make everyone think the pussyman was the killer and he tries to strangle the woman, she suddenly finds that actually she IS into him.

I mean on the one hand some great character writing and shows how truly fucked in the head that woman is... on the other hand, I'm not totally convinced she wasn't just writing it as a happy ending and he finding she really loved her soulmate the whole time...

I love christies works, and that includes all the values of the era she reflects... but there's some stuff that hits my current year brain and makes me laugh. Like all the ejaculating Hastings does.

She doesn't come right out and say it, but there are lesbian-coded characters in some stories and they're usually a little sus (or worse, such as in the novel Nemesis).

I dunno, I really don't. I'm not sure life long protestant who was born in the Victorian era was trying to sneak gay characters into her books. I'm not saying you're definitely wrong, I just don't buy it myself.
