I've heard really good things about knock off lego kits these days, that some of them are even better than the original.

The kit I bought was only $5, and it feels quality! I've certainly had some stinkers in my past experience, with bricks that refuse to stay snapped together, but I'm especially pleased by not only the brick quality, but also the kit design as well! The phoenix that they designed for this is pretty nice. :)

The best knockoff brand by far is Fun Whole. Their bricks are higher quality than Lego, they don’t steal designs or any other intellectual property, they cost what Lego did ten years ago (and often even less than that), and they include light sets for all their buildings. I’ve also heard amazing things about their customer service but haven’t personally had to contact them. Usually when people do it’s because they ripped a wire in the lighting kit.
Mould King brands tend to be pretty good knockoffs, too. But it’s hit or miss if their designs are stolen. And they’re constantly setting up and retiring their brands because they tend to get shut down for various infringements.
