It's not that people have changed, it's that social media dumps everything in together and it's harder to cultivate your own people. And also outrage gets promoted. Someone saying "Eh, each to their own," is never going to get the interaction or algorithmic push of "I LOVED this show and you HATED it which means you HATE me and that means you're a RACIST". Because if you post about something you're going to see all the top interacted posts, which are of course all the top ragebait posts.

And if you've never practiced the skill of blocking and curating, you're starting from scratch, and if you're a teenager, all your emotions are at 110% and the interaction feels important.
