I don't know anything about Voltron. But SPN was the first big fandom I saw that sent hate to the creators, actors (particularly actresses), anyone involved in the show just because they disliked specific plotlines. Other big fandoms started doing that after (like Star Wars and Doctor Who), but SPN seemed to be one of the earliest ones doing it.

The fandom seriously crossed lines, for sure, but I feel like that's a matter of random timing. SPN was the big fandom that took off right as a lot of mainstream social media took off. IIRC the first few seasons directly aligned with the launch of Twitter. So for the first time, fandom had mass direct access to the creators and actors.

Star Trek Voyager, Smallville and a ton of K-pop bands had those issues long before SPN.
