The fandom seriously crossed lines, for sure, but I feel like that's a matter of random timing. SPN was the big fandom that took off right as a lot of mainstream social media took off. IIRC the first few seasons directly aligned with the launch of Twitter. So for the first time, fandom had mass direct access to the creators and actors.
