It depends on attitude to me tbh

If there's surprise cheating involved in a storyline and someone who is not interested in reading about that thinks it would've been nice if that were mentioned/tagged somewhere, but recognizes that it's the risk they run reading untagged fiction? May even personally note to others not interested in that particular trope that the book contains a lot of infidelity drama? Cool

Demanding an official warning on the book though, from the author, about it containing cheating tropes like they are something dangerous or inherently bad in fiction and the author is negligently exposing people to it if they don't "warn"? Yeahhh, entitlement

Nobody has any issues with sites like doesthedogdie.com existing and doing their thing on their own. Now if people demanded official warnings from movie studios plastered on promo posters about whether any dog in any movie dies... lol

(Anonymous) 2025-03-25 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I was under the impression content warning and trigger warning were interchangeable, back on Tumblr I would tag triggers with "cw [subject]" since "trigger" became watered down.

2. "Warnings" for things that aren't for sensitive topics is... Very weird to me. In published works too? I wonder if this is residual "AO3 tag culture"....

(Anonymous) 2025-03-25 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I appreciate it on ao3 but for some reason I absolutely hate it on published works. Though I do appreciate the people who compile the data on websites like doesthedogdie.com so people who need it can find it.

I was about to disagree with you until I saw your * because that's what I expect content warnings to be: traumatic or upsetting content in a book that I appreciate if it's warned for beforehand. But a warning for general tropes is... bizarre? Unless I'm missing some context here the use of general tropes does not require a warning, readers can list the tropes on Goodreads or whenever and that's fine, but if I'm picking up a book I don't care what the tropes are I care what the story is about.

Yeah, but (non-trigger) content warnings are also advertisements! I hate the "you wrote about a bad thing therefore you are bad" line of thinking, but if someone wants to warn/promote their book with what it contains, I'm good with that.

(Anonymous) 2025-03-26 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
It's not about avoiding uncomfortable things.

Graphic depictions of rape, written or otherwise, currently send me into a violent panic attack. Because I was, you know, raped. So avoiding it is literally a safety measure until I get to a better mental place. And I have, more than once, run into rape scenes I didn't think were coming.

How come y'all are talking about content warnings in general and not the much funnier thing the secret is actually about, people being upset about SEEING content warnings for things that bother them?

I'm really curious whether whatever op saw to inspire this is really as absurd as they're making it sound, kinda wanna see it if so.

i've only seen books label their tropes when that's advertisement for readers who are looking for those tropes. is there an example of this you can give OP?

(Anonymous) 2025-03-27 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I find content warnings on original fiction childish and unnecessary. To me it doesn't matter what happened or didn't happen to you in life - generally you'll find the subject matter either in the description or a review. Then you know not to read it. Are readers such delicate flowers that they have to curate their reading so carefully?

I'm someone who will have panic attacks over incidents in movies or TV, but I have yet to be triggered by fiction. Touched, upset, depressed, but if it's too much I put the book down.

However, I agree with content warnings in fic, because you don't know what you're going to get otherwise.

While I definitely see your point, to me Christine as a character is pretty massively stunted at the age her father died. If she wasn't so child-like, her belief in "The Angel of Music" would break suspension of disbelief. I like to think she matures throughout the musical, but she's definitely got some trauma-informed mental problems.

Putting this here as it is political.

Mother fucking hell. Government attorney today was a complete asshole. Right at the start he told the judge that his position was the fact that my client snuck in before he applied for asylum meant that everything was a lie, my client had submitted a fraudulent asylum claim, and nothing my client said could be trusted. And then asked the judge to reject all our evidence and submissions.

My client was already feeling traumatized from going over his story to prepare yesterday. And already feeling a bit sick. But he proceeded to throw up and we had to reschedule the hearing. To October. So now he needs to stay in detention until we get back in court in October.

This is one of the strongest asylum cases I've ever worked on (involves torture and a death sentence for being gay). We would have won. I know it. I'm just so fucking done. I want to scream.
