I’m the same way with some genres but the total opposite with others. I prefer modern fantasy but classic SF, general fiction, and nonfiction.

Same here. I still try some new books occasionally, but they don't really grip me like the older ones do. For example, couldn't get through Atlas Six and ended up skimming the second half of the book (not a loss since the story didn't even finish properly, because everything needs to be a series now).

Ever since 50 Shades (and other stories that may or may not fall within the genre) became popular, I get paranoid that more and more people are just filing the serial numbers off their fic. I hope I'm wrong.

I have found that translated books tend to have much better editing than English-first ones, but yeah, it's really noticeable these days!

Idk it could also be a genre thing too. I tend to read YA novels and I feel the quality has dramatically decreased in general.

I don't want to presume but I always suspected it was because it's a lot easier to self-publish (therefore be prone to not be as well edited) and become viral despite not necessarily being the most well written because it hits whatever trope is most popular at the moment. + Perhaps literacy comprehension levels are in general lower than before and thus what constitutes as good writing is also lower on average.

I used to be into basically any kind of genre book (horror, fantasy, sci fi, etc.) - literally the least picky person as long as it wasn't Real World stuff. Now for some reason all the new books I can read are nonfiction (mostly history and media studies) and some VERY specific subgenres of sci fi. Idk what's wrong with me, but I miss getting obsessed with whatever random fantasy thing I picked up off the shelf :/

Maybe we've just read too many books and things are more derivative now. I whipsaw from wanting to read comforting, familiar tropes and something completely new, and the new things just don't feel that novel.

I mean... as much as I'm loving finding new authors, I'm MOSTLY getting new books from authors who have been writing a while (even if they are new to *me*). And if I'm gambling on something, there's always the library, to which I am extremely grateful, because I picked up a thriller there that did the trick for me (I needed ANY kind of mental stimulation while stuck in a hotel), but good lord was the editing nonexistent, I'd have hated it so much if I'd spent money on it, and I do sometimes feel myself just Not Vibing with certain newer/younger trad published authors the way I vibe with authors who are my age or older.

There was an excerpt in the back of one book for something from the same publisher but a different author, and it was EGREGIOUS. Neither the writer or an editor did the most basic of research for this regency romance. I could have stomached the very modern tone if the historical details were accurate, maybe, but midway down the first page there was a casual reference to something that didn't exist until nineteen twenty.

Trek has always had a strong body horror thing going for it, I can't think of a single Trek show that hasn't had at least a couple of body horror episodes per season.

I always thought of it as a loose modern interpretation. I feel like the creators left out Jane Fairfax because of the messy implications of female competition at that time (saying this as the movie's original target audience). So they made "Frank" gay and used Tai's character development as a foil to Cher.

I mean that last line is good, as far as I'm concerned as an author (of fanfiction) myself?

"This story/you as an author taught me something I didn't know about myself" is perfectly valid as a comment, the author doesn't need to know the full details of what you've learned or why.

Sometimes the only way to turn my brain off is either to give into the thing it is demanding I do, no matter how stupid the cash cost is, or to drown it in alcohol until it shuts down.

How do all you normals manage to turn your brains off and not spiral into anxiety over stupid things? Just do stuff and not worry? Tell me your secret? Please.
