God, I hope no one actually saw Arthur/Merlin as anything other than fanon... and I love them to death, bless them. That being said, this show has so altered the original canon that it's almost unrecognizable, so almost anything could be possible in the very alternate version - but I don't think mainstream TV is ready for the slashiness taking over legendary canon.

Even though I ship Gwen/Arthur, my Merlin OTP is Arthur/Merlin. I never EVER expect this ship to become canon and I think people who believe it will are just fooling themselves. The cast and crew acknowledge that Arthur/Merlin is very prominent in the series and they know it's one of the biggest ships in the fandom, but I don't think they'll ever write in a romance between the two. The fans can take care of that.

I certainly did. And don't give me this historical canon crap of the Arthurian legend, this show doesn't follow the legend on most accounts, so there was no obligation to make Arthur/Gwen canon instead of Arthur/Merlin.

I'm also really fed up with the tone of the above question. As if I'm deluded to think that Arthur/Merlin could become canon. It's not any less unlikely for Arthur to fall in love with his manservant than with his step sisters maidservant. Arguments like 'but it's a family show so they wouldn't bring The Gay' really piss me off, because it implies that homosexual relationships between men are inherently more sexual than heterosexual ones, which is discriminating and very 20th century.

I don't like being told that it was crazy of me to ever think that a perfectly normal ship could never become canon, just because they involve two men. Please don't insult me by claiming that Merlin and Arthur both being men isn't the reason you think it'd never happen.

This has nothing to do with Gwen!hate or misogyny or racism, it's the simple truth that slash pairings are less likely to become canon because we live in a mainly homophobic society. And I want to be able to watch shows that have gay men without making the fact that they are gay their only purpose. I would like to have heroes and role models that are not reduced to being the best friend, the comic relief, the beautiful fag that dies or a walking cliche.

I thought most of the fans were just upset that they completely ignored the Arthur/Morgana thing they were building with the out of nowhere Arthur/Gwen relationship. I think they're cute but I think it should've happened next season after an Arthur/Morgana relationship of some sortt and with more development. Arthur developed feelings in like one episode.

Oh please. Most people only problem with Arthur/Gwen is how rushed it was, it almost feel like we skipped an entire season; Arthur barely cares for anyone beside Gwen, and all of his devellopment in season 1 with Morgana or Merlin (slash fan or not, there was devellopment.) seems to have disappeared by magic.

Now I don't care about it anymore; Arthur's way to act in season 2 looks like a kind of joke, so I'm loling and watching for others reason than the plot. I have the legend to forget whatever fuckery may happen in Merlin, and I have season 1.

If this kind of devellopment please some people, glad for them, but let people disliking it dislike it.

(And why do people keep bringing the legend in there ? Arthur/Gwen isn't a love story in the legend so let slash fans hope for more between Merlin and Arthur in Merlin )

I loved the kiss, thought it was BEAUTIFUL, didn't think it was rushed (or at least not rushed in a bad way) -- but I'm not even getting into that right now because this is still a pretty douchey secret.

I don't really care about Merlin/Arthur becoming canon; I don't need my ships to be 'justified' by anyone.

What I do care about is the shitty way in which Arthur/Gwen was shoved down our throats from the word go in this series. They had very little interaction in the first series, and each of them had far more chemistry with the other main cast than with each other. Actually, in terms of most of their interactions, it just feels like s2 did not evolve naturally from s1.

I was actually kind of looking forward to Arthur/Gwen, and then they rushed it and robbed us of all the fun.

Like, even if they kissed (which I thought was too soon, but still didn't need to ruin it), the kiss should have been followed by a SUPER AWKWARD MOMENT OF AWKWARD and then we should have episodes of their interactions being confused and irritated and them constantly sidestepping each other. And episodes where they almost confess, but then get interrupted, or suddenly realise it can't happen on their own and so try to ignore it, before they ever even officially admit to liking each other. And THEN they should admit it and have the angsty "but we can't!" talk.

I really wanted them to NOT like each other for a while, honestly.

And quite frankly, this should happen NEXT season or some other season when one or both of them have already some other somewhat serious relationship that makes it look to the viewers like Arthur/Gwen will NEVER happen (such as Arthur/Morgana, or Merlin/Gwen, seeing as Gwen openly had a crush on him last season that we're now pretending never happened, apparently).

Basically, they took two seasons' worth of awesome storytelling opportunities and chucked them out the window for one forced, rushed episode so they could skip straight to the angst, which isn't nearly as fun as the awkward that should precede the angst.

I just felt like half the fun of knowing that Arthur and Gwen get together should be making it look incredibly impossible and then slowly figuring out how it could be possible anyway. Instead of just whacking people over the head with "ZOMG DESTINY".

(And I love Arthur/Merlin, and would love if it happened, but never actually EXPECTED it to, thanks.)

I don't know anyone who thought that Merlin/Arthur would become canon, no, but I'm sure there are people who did consider it a possibility. There are always a few in any crowd. Especially since there are so many kids in this fandom, ones who don't know the legends, ones who don't really understand that these things just don't happen on shows like Merlin. I'm--a little bit glad that there are people who are unjaded enough to think that it is possible? I do wish the average homophobic or homo-not-that-there's-anything-wrong-with-that-but-I-don't-want-to-watch-it-on-any-of-my-shows tv watcher would stop dragging his or her feet and get with the program. There are so many storylines waiting to be explored that are off-limits because of all the squeamish viewers and cowardly execs.

Anyway, it's one thing to know that a pairing you don't particularly care for is most likely going to be happening somewhere along the line; it's another thing entirely to see the storylines you prefer abruptly derailed to thrust that one pairing into sharp focus prematurely. I would have preferred to keep the illusion for a while longer, and to see the canon ship brought to a nice boil towards the end of the show's run. Angst tends to get old fast. It takes talented writers to make it work over multiple seasons, and, call me crazy, but I'm not prepared to bet on the Merlin writers having the chops.

I love Gwen/Arthur. Every pairing in that show is cute. I even liked that episode (even if everything happened really quickly) up until the end when Arthur blew her off with the 'it's never going to work.' After everything Gwen was trying to teach him about thinking of other people... just... *facepalm*
