I think that's part of the fantastic writing in this series - that it shows how complicated people can be, and that there are many layers to what happens in the show. This situation in particular was really conflicted, because Asif is right to want to protect people even if it means breaking laws by smuggling in refugees who are in danger. But he's wrong to do it the way he did, i.e. by endangering his partner and leaving him out of the decision-making. I agree with you that Sam's choice is portrayed as loving, but he was wronged by not being allowed to make that choice from the beginning, as an equal partner.

It really is a great series for complex characters - I think it's a sign of a great series when it can stir up genuine emotion thanks to the very human contradictions and how the character arcs play out.

Yes! And as far as we saw, it meant he lost his military career as well! What a doormat.
