Same. I'll never stop being bitter about Iron Man being a main character in the third Captain America movie.

He became the main character in every movie. He took over Spiderman too. Really annoying. Even after he was dead he was taking things over. And I liked his first two movies a lot. He's great on his own thing. And he was fine in Avengers 1. But when he started to take over everything it got really annoying.

Thissss

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Amen. I liked the character initially, but he didn't need to be in EVERYTHING as the main focus.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 04:11 am (UTC)(link)
This is a big exaggeration, I think. In Spider-Man, he was not a main character but a supporting one. And what about everyone else who took center stage during Civil War? Are they also "taking things over"? Why is Tony the only one getting called out for that? He played a significant role in the Civil War movie because he had a major role to play in the Civil War comics. Were the movie makers supposed to ignore that? He and Steve are the main leaders of the Avengers in most of the Avengers comics, so it's logical that they would get a bit more screen time than the other superheroes. Finally, Steve's shadow after his "death" looms over the narrative just as much as Tony's. When I hear fans complain about how much Tony "took over, even after his death", all I can think is that they disliked the character so much that anytime he even remotely was treated as an important part of the storyline, they got annoyed.

Yes! They changed so much other stuff from the Civil War storyline in the comics that it was very much not the same thing, so why not that? (To be fair, the comics storyline was fucking terrible, the movie was only mildly crap, so I'd have to say the changes were a good idea on the whole.)

Why did they have to make Civil War a "Captain America" movie. Make it an Avengers movie and have a different movie that actually focused on Cap as Cap 3.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
In Spiderman, he was a "supporting character" who directly caused two of the villains and handed the hero multiple magitech suits and gadgets. That is quite a lot for a "supporting character".

Yeah, RDJ tends to have that effect in whatever movie he's in.

Hm…I’m having a hard time thinking of examples off the top of my head. I can think of plenty of films where he was the main character or one of two main characters. But not really ones where I felt like the movie should have been (or was originally) focused on someone else.

But maybe it’s a personal blind spot, since I do often find him charming and enjoyable to watch.

I'm STILL bitter about that too

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
It really didn't help that Cap 3 was not a solo Captain America movie and all these years later I am still so very bitter about this, lol. We could have gotten some solo story for him if he had been given the chance for it at all post-TWS, but nope, his last solo movie was gobbled up into another Avengers movie and after that it was never going to happen due to the nature of what IW and Endgame were.

not OP here

I was sincerely hoping for the madbomb or William Burnside, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I wholeheartedly agree.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
I completely agree.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Agree, and also for the selfish reason that I like Chris Evans' shaven face. He just won't ditch that beard now and it makes him 80% less attractive to me.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 02:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yup

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
It is toxic. The way they smuggled the guns into the airport (the wan scene), went to other countries to blow shit up, refused to follow international law or have any accountability is not a good look.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, agreed!

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, taking an underaged kid to another country for a fight with super powered people, creating an AI when literally everyone around you told you not to, and then blaming them and trying to put restrictions on them for your mistake, and refusing to follow international law and the accords that you just signed so you can try to kill a brainwashed torture victim? Not a good look.

But standing up for your principles, for your friends and family, even if it's against the law because it's the right thing to do? The best look. Very hot. 10/10

ayrt
I disagree with you but you get points for taking the time to write your argument and for being civil.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-04 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
+10000000

I agree wholeheartedly.

(Anonymous) 2025-06-07 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
This, right here. Captain America violated federal US and International law and, with Bucky and T'Challa, was responsible for causing bodily harm to a bunch of innocent people. That's really what I hate worst about the US right now. My love for Cap died in CW. Bucky didn't seem to be all there, mentally, so I give him some more slack. T'Challa really disappointed me as well, but I didn't hold a torch for him like I did for Cap.

oooh i'll spoil this thread and say that i wouldn't call his position in civil war non-toxic american patriotism and think that changing the comic conflict the way they did was a bad one for his character.

so i guess i agree because i wish he had gotten like...a character arc. one at all.
