Fandom references made in non fandom spaces

I just made a Psych reference with my family and as soon as I said it I knew it was a mistake. And sure enough, none of them got it and thought I was being serious.

Also made a Neverending Story reference the other day and nobody understood it and looked at me with confusion.

I don't pepper my conversation with pop culture references in general, but if I do make one, I consider the audience. It's not likely that I'd drop a fandom reference to my family or co-workers, because that'd be weird.

I do this to my wife and it drives her nuts. It's the way my brain thinks.

God, the number of times specifically I've had to stop myself from using the phrase 'little boy cat' because I knew people wouldn't get the reference...
