I prefer bad boys. I think I was about 36 when that became unpopular.

I seem to prefer either fully evil or fully good boys, with very little inbetween.

Not OP.

But I can roll with villains being the shitheads they are because the story doesn't pretend they're not doing awful things, even if they have a reason for it. But those 'romantic' bad boys are a complete turn off for me because they're being shitty and awful but it's framed as 'romantic' or 'mysterious' when he's just a negging asshole. Which I feel is a big difference.

That makes sense. And I think I'm pretty much the same. Villain that is clearly a villain and also attractive? I'm down for that. "badboy" that we're supposed to think is romantic and cool while they are doing shitty and/or sexist things? No thanks.

DA

But I also get tired of people dismissing and belittling the fact that women often really enjoy villains by mischaracterizing them as "bad boys."

NAYRT but amen to that.

I've never liked bad boys, they're just fuckheads that the story is trying to pretend are actually romantic deep down when they're not. I can understand the appeal of 'oh he'll change for me' to a degree, but I can never vibe with the execution because he's just an obnoxious twat who isn't worth even 1/4 of the effort the female lead puts in to 'tame' him.

The whole appeal of the "bad boy" is that he's dangerous but gentle to the female protagonist. Most of the time though "bad boys" are just a-holes that are shitheads to everyone around them. Wanting a good boy love interest totally circumvents that so it's a much better bet!

Good boys are cuter than bad boys, but unfortunately, I'm a lesbian whose drawn to the mean villainesses. Ah well.

I always was drawn to the bad boy due to wanting to fix his damage. I also think a part of me thought a bad boy would treat me differently because I was surrounded by dudes people consider nice/normal, and they were massive assholes to me and/or women in their lives.
Took me a bit longer to understand that it's the norm to be surrounded by guys who suck. Good or bad boy, didn't matter much.
