Let's say there's a boss that's hugely built up to be a big badass. In normal mode he can wipe your party in two hits if you don't extensively prep. In easy mode he falls over. In easy mode you can skip doing all the side area stuff you'd need to prep, and miss all the lore there and dismiss it as optional content when it wouldn't be otherwise.

I can see how this might affect how a player experiences a story or how much of a story they do experience. I've actually seen professional reviews get called out on this by players being like 'wtf you missed entire parts of the story then judged it.' Ofc this only applies to certain genres of games.

But for some people in easy mode it is just as hard and needs just as much prep. I always figured that's the whole point of easy mode, for players that have a hard time it makes it so it's still challenging for them but 'easier' overall. Also, I don't really know any game that works like you said? Easy mode isn't a "skip content you don't like" mode. You still have to do the quests and stuff, the combat etc is just easier.

But tbf I am not as deep into the gaming circles as I used to be. I pretty much stick to the games I want to play and the friends I have, so maybe in some other genres and games easy mode means something different.

Though I know in every mode you can skip content and dialogue in a lot of games, and I can see people getting annoyed at reviewers who skip that and then like to judge the story and content when they didn't actually play the game.

nayrt but in the original version of Resident Evil 4, easy mode completely bypasses some areas and fights, so if you only play on easy mode you're quite literally missing out on chunks of the game, like the maze.

That's assuming people who play on easy mode skip things. Which, I can only speak for myself, I still explore everything. I want the story but I also want to experience the game, even just on easy. I'm a terrible gamer so sometimes easy is still hard for me, lol.

But, I only "review" games on my personal journal and I'm upfront that I play on easy mode. I don't totally disagree with OP (altho it feels kinda mean), but I just wanted to pushback on your one point.

Yeah, for me easy mode is a way to skip the stress and stop concentrating on the pure mechanics, so that I can actually follow and enjoy the story.

In normal mode I’ll take the shortest route I can from start to finish, just to escape. In easy mode, I can explore and enjoy the story.
