the term "normalize"

(Anonymous) 2025-06-20 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
As in "let's normalize XYZ."

Did finally fall out of fashion? I haven't heard it as much.

One of the more annoying millennialisms if I'm being honest.

I agree with you that it’s fallen out of use. When I occasionally see it on tumblr, it’s always in an ironic sense.

Its use is mostly being normalized (haha) for things I'd have to discuss at the bottom of the page. As in, "don't normalize (bad thing) because people will be likelier to let worse things happen."

I don't get how it has anything to do with millennials though. I've heard people across generations use the term.

The new phrase is "untabooing" and honestly I would rather have kept normalize.

What. That has "unalive" vibes but what's the point of censoring "normalize"? Are we inventing algospeak words just for fun now?

It took me way too long to figure out what that word is supposed to be. It sounds like some niche outdoors activity. "Sure hope we can get out to the mountains this summer for some untabooing."

Lets retaboo that shit

I only see normalize with antis these days, as in "Your one shot that has 30 hits about a 30 old dating a 25 year old is normalizing pedophilia, die in a fire."

Re: the term "normalize"

My favorite thing ever was when I asked someone if my husband had groomed me (we started dating when he was 25 and I was 21) and bless 'em, they stuck to their guns and said, "yes."

I can't wait to get one of those antis who thinks autistic=child. I was recently diagnosed, so I really want to know if my wife of 20 years, who is two years younger than me, is now suddenly a pedo after my diagnosis.

I dislike the term because it's slactivism.

You don't "normalize" something by asking permission, asking for people to change their perception and not judge. You normalize a thing by not caring if it's seen as normal and doing it anyway so people start seeing it as normal
