I just wanted to vent about English people still saying Oliver Cromwell was good guy who never committed genocide, and never acted like a tyrannical religious fanatic and dictator. And a massive hypocrite too. And then things escalated real quick. So, sorry about that.

English people are dumb about English history, Cromwell is a wrong 'un, and nothing is happening elsewhere in the world germane to this statement. Are we clear?

I'm British and like I said yesterday, I'm really surprised that anyone who knows anything about the bare bones history of Oliver Cromwell who like him in any capacity. No one really benefited from him taking rule unless they were also a hardcore puritan or in the courts reaping from the horrors inflicted onto the Irish and Scottish.

That being said, if these people barely go past 'He replaced the monarchy briefly' or are getting alternative information about that bastard then that would also not surprise me.

There are people who will claim that they hate Israel government or something but the way the frame things, it's clearly overt or hidden antisemitism and as someone who is very Jewish I hate having to monitor it or explain to people what they said is antisemitic.

Documentary - The Brain Washing of My Dad

Anyone watch this? It's a documentary that came out around 10 years ago, but is still painfully relevant. A woman sees her father, a caring and rather ordinary guy, get slowly taken over by right wing radio (think Rush Limbaugh and similar types) until he's spewing all their talking points and hate.

Now, I think this family is more fortunate than most, but it's wild how easily a person can get sucked into the alt-right pipeline, even if they were once liberal to some degree.

I feel like we all have people like this in our families. My late Grandma used to listen to Limbaugh religiously and I never understood why anyone would want to sit and listen to some dude rant and rave and scream and yell about how much he hated one group of people or another. She was otherwise a very kind person if a little weak willed. She wasn't even big into church or religious stuff.

I think part of it is that they fall into it somehow, get freaked out by all the negative stuff they're hearing and then get addicted to the rush of someone yelling at the top of their lungs about those fears. It really feeds into the side of human nature that likes to cast certain groups of people as "other".

It's like there's just a side of human nature that likes to be scared of "the other" and demonize them. And it's not even just humans. You also see this behavior in chimpanzees directed at other chimpanzees they consider "other". I don't want to say it's biological but it's easily triggered in some people more than others. And unfortunately, there are a lot of gullible and vulnerable people who fall prey to it. Plus it's hard to get away from because fear makes money.

I haven't seen that and honestly Idk if I could stand to watch it. It would hit too close to home.

I am so thankful my own dad had the opposite transition. He used to listen to Rush etc and be very Republican, but over the years he has softened and eventually Trump pushed him over the edge and he doesn't call himself a Republican at all anymore.

His family, unfortunately, went in the opposite direction, and they are all well educated smart people. It's been pretty hard to watch him have to distance himself and watch what he says around them. They all grew up very close and the downward spiral into super right wing Trump cult has been really hard for him to watch.

Honestly, for years now, I don't know how to deal with my older sister seeming to have fallen into the right-wing sphere. I know calling out the bullshit and talking down on the grifters she likes will just have her cutting me out of her life or turning our relationship into debate-bro-type arguments, but I can't just ignore her bigoted/bizarre takes anymore. And yet I don't know what a good approach would be.

I'd like for her to recognize and deal with her internalized racism and internalized misogyny but questioning her worldview is asking for Wolverine to join in on a knife fight.
