I'm mixed on it. If the person says outright they don't want fanfiction written, I would respect that (or as much as possible). I understand the legal fears some have, and it would be challenging to prove one didn't steal an idea from the fans when the story is all over the internet. I also know how sensitive one can be to see their creation being treated in ways that feel inauthentic or wrong (at least to the creator).

But at the same time it kind of feels like a parent rejecting a kid's creative birthday card. Obviously, it's not the same thing, and there's no obligation on the creator's part to acknowledge or praise story/art based on their creation (and there should be no expectation of this). But when someone innocently expresses how they feel about a story, and does it through fic, and it's met with a middle finger from the creator, that can kind of sting.
