I feel you. My family was also poor, as well as Asian (had the stereotypical "study study study you don't need this game(s)" parents), so I grew up in a strict household, so I was limited on many games I really wanted to play. Certainly I've been in a lot of fandoms, but there were so many I wished I could have played or watched and joined instead of being from the sidelines.

I don't know if I quite mourn it, mostly because I'm an adult who can buy all the stuff I wanted when I was younger (and it makes me happy), but I get you.

My parents were very strict and obsessive about controlling what I read or watched, and a lot of people my age are nostalgic for things I was forbidden from (like Pokemon). I also really regret not getting to be part of so many fandoms. I try to take time to have fun with kid shows and games now and again as an adult to relax and give myself a chance to enjoy the things I couldn't back then, but I understand the sadness of missing out in childhood.

I honestly think Q is super overrated as a character. I find him really annoying most of the time.

Idk I enjoyed him in Voyager. I just feel like he's a character that is best used sparingly.

I also think Q was best in moderation. The more you see of him, the more annoying he gets and it plays havoc with the narrative because he's too powerful.

Anyone who tries to claim the movie isn't skeevy is a walking red flag. I love that movie, but it is skeevy and problematic as hell.

I also had no idea Burt Reynolds was up for the role. It is kind of hilarious to think of him instead of Gere. You're right that it is a totally different energy! Personally, I think Richard Gere is incredibly creepy and so worked really well for the role.

I agree with everything in this secret. Gere was a better choice here, for sure.

I would like to see a sort of take on this plot where the rich guy was more of a nerd, tho, and the call girl also fixes his style. (Buying that an extremely attractive and together rich guy needed a call girl strains credulity, and also sets an unhealthy standard for sugar daddy shit when you know most of the RL men that are paying for "companionship" are kind of gnarly.

I guess if I had to choose a descriptor for her writing, it would be 'serviceable'. So, I'm with you there. I'm not sure having serial killer in your life should be considered lucky, though. There are a number of true crime writers who got their start by being close to a crime in one way or another, so that just feels like an aspect of the genre.

I am A-OK with sailing the seven seas on general principal. I wanna make that much clear right off the bat.

But I am doubly ok with doing it if you still support the creators you like as you outline here. It's just common sense. The weaponization of "You can't criticize it until you experience it... Oh you experienced it and it was exactly the kind of dogshit you were expecting? Well, thanks for the money!" attitudes means it just makes sense.

Also I saw a quote once along the lines of "Taking from a resource without diminishing the reserves cannot be called theft" and that stuck with me. ESPECIALLY with the recent "actually, you're not buying games / movies / shows, you're renting access to them" bullshit. If paying isn't owning, pirating isn't stealing. I count this as just simple tit-for-tat.

They have a moral right to try and get paid for their product and to try to get paid the maximum amount for the minimum quality... And I have a moral right to try and NOT get fucking robbed by taking a copy which does not prevent you from selling it to other people. May the best man win, I say.

I am so glad I was never into the Buffy or Angel fandoms. I enjoyed those shows and was lucky to have irl friends to enjoy them with me and never got into the drama of the fandom. I feel like it would have ruined the fun for me.
