If a fic writer has an author's note, especially a snippy one, that says that other fic writers can't write any sort of continuation or sequel to their story, I think they are either a hugely arrogant hypocrite or have very little self-awareness. I'll likely still read their story, though I think less of them.

I guess some of them might have some bad experiences with this issue but yeah, I'd wager most don't and are just full of themselves.

I've never really felt the need to write a sequel to/fanfic of another fanfic... But even if I did, well a fic author is not a book author/movie director, they're just some guy like me, so I wouldn't want to upset them. It's sad to see how people can go from "oh my god, this fic is so amazing, it owns my body and soul and I keep on thinking about it!" to "this stupid author WON'T LET ME write a sequel to their fic, who the fuck do you think you are, conceited bitch". Fanfiction can be personal and precious to some people, I'm not surprised they'd be uncomfortable with someone demanding to play in their brain sandbox.

I'm mixed on it. If the person says outright they don't want fanfiction written, I would respect that (or as much as possible). I understand the legal fears some have, and it would be challenging to prove one didn't steal an idea from the fans when the story is all over the internet. I also know how sensitive one can be to see their creation being treated in ways that feel inauthentic or wrong (at least to the creator).

But at the same time it kind of feels like a parent rejecting a kid's creative birthday card. Obviously, it's not the same thing, and there's no obligation on the creator's part to acknowledge or praise story/art based on their creation (and there should be no expectation of this). But when someone innocently expresses how they feel about a story, and does it through fic, and it's met with a middle finger from the creator, that can kind of sting.
