Nope, not doing it wrong at all! In fact, you're in line with numerous studies about piracy. While it may seem backwards, people who go to the effort of pirating a type of media usually do so because they have a decent level of investment in it! Even if they don't buy every item they pirate, media pirates tend to be the people who ARE buying books, games, movies, music, etc already, and "piracy as trial" seems to be a pretty common theme.

Now that I am older and have more money, I tend to go the other way - I'll buy an ebook and if I like it, I'll pirate a copy so that it doesn't vanish on me. And if there's no legal way for me to watch a movie or TV show on the subscription services I pay for, then I'll pirate. I want to give creators my money, but I want to actually own the product!

Yeah, I feel like pirating is fine if there's no legal way for you to obtain the thing.

I pirated a digital-only single from one of my favorite Japanese bands once because Amazon Japan wouldn't allow me to download it since my address wasn't in Japan. It was so stupid because I WANTED to buy it! And since it was digital-only, I couldn't even order a CD instead. I literally had no way to access it legally even though I wanted to.

Amazon Japan can be a pain like that! If you're ever running into that problem again, you can use tensobox to get a Japanese shipping address for free. I used it when I needed to purchase a digital giftcard for a Japanese streaming service that didn't accept foreign credit cards.

Yeah, I've only ever pirated if the series/film/book isn't available at all. As soon as it is, I buy it as I'd rather have a legal copy. The legal copy is usually far better quality too, which is another plus.

Mood! Similarly, after my parents house burned down when I was in college, I pirated a bunch of the music and movies I lost in the fire. I think there's something to be said about continuing to have copies of things that you've legally owned. And I have gradually rebought basically everything that I bothered to pirate.... Sometimes multiple times XD *glances at my vinyl record collection*

Thanks for the sources and I love how that’s a Yukiko icon. Because pirating Persona as a teen led me to get a PSP and later a PS4 and collector versions and everything!

YEAHHHHH PERSONA!!! I also have a bunch of the special editions. It's great that they're starting to rerelease things on modern consoles after having them trapped in the PSP/PS3 remaster prison XD

Glad I could share some sources about how piracy impacts things~
